Bear bags, newest fashion trend

-A A +A
By Brent Schanding

A new blue bag allows consumers to “go green” –– sales from it simultaneously supports the environment and local schools.

It’s called the “Bear Bag,” a multi-purpose, re-usable tote that prominently features a silk-screened paw from Spencer County’s mascot.

The bags are made from 100 percent recycled, non-woven polypropylene fibers. All proceeds support academic and athletic programs at Spencer County schools.

“At just $5 per bag they’d make a great gift idea for the holidays,” said Dr. James Ransdell, whose staff at Elk Creek Dental Care launched the fundraising program earlier this month.

Totes are dually reinforced with 20-inch carrying handles. Each is tear-resistant and water repellent, according to the manufacturer’s web site.

Jill Shontz, an Elk Creek Dental employee, said the bags can be used for grocery shopping or carrying school books. Co-workers also carry their lunch in the bags, she said.

Bags can be purchased at Elk Creek Dental Care, Elk Creek Grocery, Cricketz Grocery & Deli, Elmars Inc. BP gas station, Riverbend Food Mart and the Tea Cup.

Sales from the Bear Bag could generate as much as $5,000 for the schools, according to Ransdell.
