It was a tough spring break for the Spencer County Bears baseball team, as they dropped three games in the Derby City Classic before the rains came and washed out the rest of the tournament.
The Bears opened with a solid game despite the 3-2 loss against Southern on Monday. In that game, Jaret Cannon was the starting pitcher on the mound and gave up just three hits through six innings. However, Southern got five hits in the late innings and escaped with the one-run victory while holding the Bears to just four hits on the day.
The second matchup of the tournament against Fern Creek was one to forget. A return to last week’s fielding woes resulted in five errors that helped Fern Creek score a 12-6 victory, despite the Bears outhitting the Tigers 12-7. Westin Pittman starred at the plate with a long home run for the Bears.
In their final game of the Classic, the Bears suffered a 2-0 shutout loss to Oldham County. Again, defensive lapses that included four errors helped spoil a good day by Blake Lambdin on the mound. Lambdin allowed only three hits through five innings but the Bears were unable to offer much assistance behind him in the field, or at the plate. Brandon West did finish the three-game tournament with six hits, which led the Bears offensively.
Spencer County was scheduled to travel to Bullitt Central on Tuesday and will host Kentucky Country Day on Wednesday. Their next home game after that will be a matchup next Tuesday against Carroll County.
