The 2009 SCHS Lady Bears Volleyball team has hit the ground running this year.  Early season wins against district competitors North Bullitt and Bullitt Central were signs that this team was ready to compete.  The Lady Bears fought a hard battle against Bullitt East to lose in three games.  This match looked to be a preview of the district championships with the Lady Bears preparing for a victory.

The first tournament of the season was held August 22 at the Ohio Valley Volleyball Center.  The lady bears finished second in their pool with wins over Portland Christian and Bardstown High School.  The only loss in pool came after a hard battle against Elizabethtown High School who went on to win first place in the gold division.  The lady bears performed in tournament play beating North Bullitt and losing to Nelson County in the finals.  Overall the team was awarded second place in the Silver Division with Alyssa Ruiz selected on the “All Tournament Team”.

“Our team is coming together very early in the season, challenging much larger teams with far more experience,” said Coach Peer. “We are very fortunate to have a group of athletes that are willing to make the sacrifices in order to build a competitive volleyball program at Spencer County High School.”

“Our seniors (Sam Elder, Alyssa Ruiz, and Ashley Brown) have stepped up to lead our team of talented and dedicated players.  The future of volleyball at Spencer County High School looks very bright with the depth of our varsity bench and the skills of the upcoming JV and freshmen players,” said Peer.
