The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts has announced that Brandi Bleemel, a junior at Spencer County High School, has been selected to participate in an extensive three week program dedicated to Kentucky’s most talented and creative young artists.
These students are offered in-depth instruction in one of nine artistic disciplines: architecture, creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theatre, new media, visual art or vocal music. Brandi’s area of concentration will be in architecture. Over 1600 students audition for the program each year at four sites across Kentucky. Each spring, approximately 225 students are selected for GSA after an extensive application process, along with interviews from a panel of GSA evaluators.
During Brandi’s three week stay at Transylvania University in Lexington, she will be immersed in a daily schedule of seminars, master-classes, lectures, hands-on workshops and field trips. While each student specializes in one art form, all students participate in other interdisciplinary experiences designed to further their realm of knowledge about other arts areas beside their own.
Students come from all over the state of Kentucky where arts instruction may be limited or simply not available. Through the generosity of the donors of this summer arts residency program, these exceptionally-talented students are provided critical support while fostering discipline and achievement. GSA is an honor and an incentive for future accomplishments. The long-term economic and vitality of Kentucky can only be enhanced if we nurture and develop the wide range of talents of our youth, both academic and artistic. By living and learning in an atmosphere such as this, students learn to give back to their communities as well as their schools through the arts. GSA plays a vital role in preparing its students for their pursuit of careers not only in the arts but in all facets of professional life requiring leadership roles, critical thinking skills, along with important communication and expressive skills.
Spencer County High School is fortunate to have Brandi representing the arts community from Spencer County. Brandi is the daughter of Dennis and Kimberly Bleemel.
