In the 1960s, he rode his bicycle more than 14,000 miles across America and Canada, as part of a 16-month trip to raise awareness for muscular dystrophy. A decade later, he walked more than 3,000 miles from Kentucky to California — on stilts. He compared the blisters on his feet to small tomatoes, but says it was worth it when he broke into the “Guinness Book of World Records” for stilt-walking — besting the previous title holder by more than 1,200 miles, after walking into a Tulsa, Okla. stadium in front of 25,000 screaming soccer fans to mark the achievement.
