Clawing their way to top

SCHS Cross Country had a winning day at the Wildcat Invitational in Edmonson County last Saturday.  The team traveled south to battle teams they had not yet faced in competition.  Their effort to shake things up a bit paid off with a girl’s team victory, two individual winners, and several members recording personal best times.

The girls team made it look easy as they placed four runners in the top ten, including a win by Charliann Garcia in her best 5K time of 19:45.  She combined with Chelsey Talley, in 2nd place with a time of 20:11, Christina Shawver 7th, Laura Klotz 10th, Adrian Gregory 12th, Whitney O’Dell 16th, and Bethany Crews improved her time by over three minutes as she placed 30th.  As they waited for the results to be posted the girls felt confident they had won, but they had no idea they had dusted two top ten teams in the process.

This should result in Spencer making their first appearance in the state rankings when they are issued again this week.

In the boys race, Cory Kleinjan took the lead early and never looked back as he held off a senior runner from Butler County to capture the win in a personal record time of 17:05.  Sam Meredith battled another Butler County runner as he took 4th place in 17:20.  Jacob Clausen placed 27th, Travis O’Dell 35th, Andrew Sharp 37th, and Mike Williams 54th, for a combined team score that was just twelve points out of third place.  Kleinjan and Meredith should join the girls on the rankings list this week.

The middle school team will be back in action along with the SCHS runners at the Franklin County Invitational in Lexington September 27.
