It is summer and time for another blockbuster movie. I understand that the Transformers have made it back to the big screen again. The idea that your car can turn into a huge robotic warrior is a little out there, but I admit I enjoyed the first Transformers movie.
Actually in that movie there are a couple of transformations. Of course the robot warriors transform into cars and trucks and planes, but there is also the transformation of a young boy into a young man. I have yet to see the first in real life, but you see the second all the time.
With all the turmoil in families these days, too many boys and girls have to take on adult responsibilities. Some of them learn responsibility and begin the transformation into young men and young women of character and strength. Others go the opposite direction and make choices that bring them pain and hardship.
I guess that is why the Bible warns us to “not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2a NIV).
Young people all over the world face that kind of choice. To be molded by a world that is uncaring and heartless, or to be transformed as their minds and hearts are renewed by God.
We all face those choices every day. Our minds, our thoughts, our hearts are moved and influenced by who and what we allow in. What do you let into your life? Who influences you?
Our world is full of voices, ideas, and images that compete for our attention. Buy this! Look like that! Live this lifestyle! It can be overwhelming at times.
This is why we need a standard to help us make those choices. Every day we face choices and decisions that will either build up or destroy our character. Over time, those choices will change us. This is why we need a guide along the way.
God has given us such a guide, the psalmist says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalms 119:105 NIV).
The patterns of this world can ruin our lives, but the word of God can free us. God’s word provides us with direction and examples to help build Godly character. Allow the word of God to begin its transforming work in your life. It is the only standard that will stand the test of time.
