Have you noticed how many kinds of cars are on the road these days? I’m not just talking about brands like Honda and Ford or Chevy and Kia. No, I mean the stunning variety of cars. Sports cars and family cars, little sedans and big limousines, SUVs and crossovers, minivans and trucks, I even saw a station wagon the other day. There are little cars that look like they could fit in the trunk of your average family car, to SUVs and vans big enough to carry a marching band. And they come in all kinds of colors, from bright red to dark black, from sunny yellow to baby blue.
And despite all those variations, basically all cars are created to do the same thing, to move people and their stuff from one place to another. Some do it with more class or flare than others, but that is what an automobile does, it helps us get where we are going. So whether you drive a Ferrari or a Fiat, it’s basically just getting you from here to there.
People come in all kinds, too. There are the tall and the small, the slim and the not so slim, those with dark complexions and those with light complexions. Some people have blonde hair, some are brunettes, some are graying and some just do without hair altogether. There are the smart and the not so smart, the beautiful and the less beautiful, there are the happy and the sad, the even tempered and the high strung. All kinds of people in all kinds of sizes shapes and temperaments, and yet, like cars, all created for one thing.
You and I were made to glorify God. Paul wrote, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV) We easily forget that our main purpose is to give God glory through our lives. We get so caught up in the business of everyday living that we forget to honor God, yet God is honored when we remember Him in the everyday.
Who gives us the food we eat? It comes from the riches of God. Who gives us the ability to earn our daily bread? God gives us skills and talents and even the health we need to provide for our families. Who created us so that we could both laugh and cry and share those emotions with others? Our loving and merciful God has granted us such a capacity for love and laughter.
When you get right down to it, cars and trucks are all pretty simple, people are amazingly complex, fearfully and wonderfully made the Bible tells us. And out of that rich diversity we can bring glory and honor to God in so many different and beautiful ways. How will your life show forth the glory of God today? In a job done with excellence? In an act of kindness shown? In a tender moment with your family? Let His glory shine through you today.
