COLUMN: Looking for refreshment? Turn to the Lord

-A A +A
By Jon Rohr

Hard work on a hot day and someone hands you a glass of ice cold sweet tea.  You feel the cold glass in your hand and taste the sweetness on your tongue.  Just a short break in a hard and busy day, but it refreshes and renews your strength.
I think we have all had those moments.
It may be a glass of tea or lemonade, or perhaps stopping for a breather under a shade tree, but we all remember those moments of refreshing.  Sometimes it is something as simple as a fresh breeze cooling us off, or a cool shower at the end of a long hard day.
It is a time when we are tired and weary, perhaps hot and sweaty, and a simple thing brings great pleasure and relief.
Those times of refreshing restore our strength. They renew our bodies and our minds and give us a boost to finish the job, or even face a new challenge.  Our energy and our spirits can get tired, and that short break, that refreshing drink has amazing powers to renew us.
The Bible talks about times of refreshing as well.
It even indicates that those moments are gifts from God.  In Acts we read, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” (Acts 3:19 NIV)
If we want the refreshing of God, we start with renewing our relationship with him.  It is something we need to do on a regular basis.
The word used here, repent, simply means to change our minds and agree with God.  We agree with God about our need for him, about our inability to refresh and renew ourselves.  We turn to him for the deep refreshment that only he can give.
The refreshing of God is something we need daily.  Just like hot and hard work wears out our bodies, the daily troubles and trials of life can wear down our spirit, can weigh down our souls.
When we choose worry or fear over trusting our Heavenly Father, when we give in to temptation instead of walking away, we become burdened and broken, but when we turn to God, he cleanses our hearts and renews our spirits.
When we are faithful to take our sins, our mistakes, our fears and hopes to him, he is faithful to send us times of refreshing.
Have you sought him out for a time of refreshing lately?
Is your heart heavy and burdened?
Seek him out, turn your mind and heart to him and let him bring you the times of refreshing that only he can bring.
