COLUMN: Main Street streetscape project should start soon

-A A +A

by Phyllis Williams | Main Street President

A couple of weeks ago, your Historic Taylorsville Main Street Committee shared the exciting news that the long awaited Phase II Streetscape project was about to begin. The section of Main Street from the Courthouse to Jefferson Street is beginning a face-lift effort that will not only increase our pride for our beautiful town, but improve the economic viability of our downtown.
Most of us remember when we did the same kind of project on the section of Main Street from the Court House over to Washington Street.  We watched as the old became new again.  We still get numerous comments on the beauty of the planters, and the friendly feeling of the new benches and street lights. Now we will finally be able to finish the job of rejuvenating our town’s signature business area.
Last Thursday, Mayor Don Pay signed the contract with the successful bidder, Pace Construction, to begin the project.  After the signing, Tom Wood of Pace joined Kevin Sisler, of Sisler-Maggard Engineering, and Mayor Pay as they walked the construction area.  They reviewed the plans to ensure that there was a complete understanding regarding the scope of the job. They discussed several of the fine points of the completed project.
Construction will start about Aug. 6.  Pace intends to work 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days per week.  It is expected that the project will be completed within 60 days, including installation of the new benches, light posts, planters and trash containers.
The Main Street Committee is encouraged by the fact that this is the same group that worked the highly successful Phase I section from Main Cross to Washington.  We expect that the experience acquired during that project will help ensure that this project will go well and be completed as scheduled.
Your Historic Taylorsville Main Street Committee can be contacted at its office located at 19 E. Main St. or by calling 502-439-9782. Please feel free to offer your comments as the construction is completed. Soon you will be as excited and pleased as we are.
