COLUMN: Saving up those heavenly treasures

-A A +A
By C.L. Glasscock

Matthew 6:19-21 says, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

In my life I have met and gotten to know many people who are rich, middle class and poor. I will have to say I have seen more poor people happier than rich or middle class. I have seen people rich and always wanting more; and middle class who God has blessed, and are not satisfied, always wanting more. I witnessed to a man who had millions of dollars and he started telling me how much good he did with his money. He had sent this girl to college and he had done all of these great things, even went to church but he never told me about Jesus being in his life. Regardless of how much we have on earth or what we have done, if we don’t have Jesus in our heart we are as lost as the man who does everything wrong and lives for the Devil every day.

Now let’s talk about our treasures in heaven. One very important question: Are you laying up your treasures in heaven or here on earth? Jesus tells us to lay up our treasures in heaven and where your treasure is there will your heart be also. Some think that regardless of what I do here, I have been saved and am going to heaven. If you make it to heaven are you going to tell Jesus, “I left my treasures on earth and you will have to send down there and get them?” What a joke. Everyone knows that will not work. I believe we need to take a look at what will happen to the things we leave on earth.

2 Peter 3:10-13 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness looking for and hasting into the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat. Nevertheless we according to his promise look for new heavens and new earth wherein dwelleth righteousness.

I think we all need to ask ourselves a question. If we knew this day was coming tomorrow, would we be trying to change our way of life and lay up treasures in heaven? If you don’t know how to start laying up treasure in heaven, a good place to start is what Jesus says in Matthew 19:14.

But Jesus said, suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And may I suggest give to the children in need the best, like you give to Jesus.
