Recently you may have seen the ad on TV where a young woman climbs a mountain and ends up standing on the peak. The music is heroic, the theme of overcoming obstacles, of striving to the top is inspiring, but in the end it is a credit card commercial!
So these heroic images are in service to a little plastic card that causes more problems than it solves. The artistry and effort to produce an advertisement like that must be incredible. I mean they had to have somebody climb a mountain! They had to have a helicopter to take the pictures! Someone had to come up with the music and all the other technical details needed to produce one little television commercial.
And somehow, even though it is just for a credit card, it is inspiring! Perhaps it captures something buried deep in our hearts; our yearning for the heroic, our desire to overcome and to stand on the summit in victory. Time and circumstances may make that desire seem a distant dream, but it still remains. And occasionally a movie or song, a story or yes, even a commercial, will remind us of it again.
And God has promised us that we can be the overcomers, that we can have the victory. “Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:4 NIV84)
In the movies and in ads on TV the victories happen in moments, but life is not like that. Life is full of ups and downs, and it can be hard for us to even see the summit, but if we trust God, we have the victory.
Life is not a sprint; it is a long haul endurance race. Every day we are tested and tried, every day we face difficulties and disappointments, but through faith we see past all that. By faith we cling to Christ and to the promise of glory to come.
In faith we wait for the victory to come, not victory bought by our hands or works, but a victory secured by His mighty work on the cross.
In the commercial a young woman stands on a pinnacle of rock, having overcome a mountain. As believers we are promised more, “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles…” (Isaiah 40:31 NIV84)
When we trust in the Lord he gives us wings! I hope you’ll start soaring even now!
