Spencer County school officials will explore at least four sites to construct a new elementary school, according to Brett Beaverson, director of operations for the district.

Those sites are within a 5-mile radius of the courthouse, he said, and include:

• a 25-acre site, located between Earlywine Plantation and Highview Estates, off KY 44 East.

• three nearby tracts of about 55 total acres, less than a mile from Taylorsville.

• a 24-acre site at KY 55 and Overlook Road.

• a 17-acre site at the intersections of Taylorsville and Elk Creek roads

“We are currently evaluating each site in accordance with state standards for site acquisition,” Beaverson said.

He declined to discuss budget and acquisition specifics until arrangements are formalized. The new school won’t replace any existing structures in the district, he said. The proposal is meant to accommodate future growth in the district.

“Ideally we will be in the new school in three years,” Beaverson said.

Typically, it takes eight to 10 months to draw plans and submit them for approval by all agencies, he said. The winning contractor will take approximately 18-24 months to build the new facility, he said.

The new facility will be built for a 600-student capacity and feature a media center sized to accommodate up to 800 students.

The board could consider an energy-saving design for the new school, he said.
