Robert Thomas dreamed of becoming a police officer.
After graduating from Spencer County High School in 2004, Thomas went to college. First to Jefferson Community College and then to Eastern Kentucky University where he studied criminal justice.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said the 24-year-old. “To keep people safe.”
Thomas’s wish officially came true Thursday when he was sworn in as Spencer County Sheriff Department’s newest deputy. A courtroom full of family and friends were there to watch him take the oath of office. When his grandmother, Marie Thomas, pinned the badge, applause erupted.
Thomas is the son of Ron and Lisa Thomas, of Taylorsville; grandson of Darwin and Marie Thomas; nephew of Sammy and Mary James Crafton; and brother to Leigh Ellen Thomas.
