Faith For Today: Let God support you as you float

-A A +A

I don’t know about you but I love to swim. I have enjoyed swimming since I was a little kid. I remember my first swimming lessons and splashing around with friends in the pool. I remember the first time I jumped off a diving board and the first time I looked down from a high dive and gathered all my courage to leap off.
I haven’t jumped from a high dive in quite a while, but I still enjoy getting into the pool. Playing with the grandkids is always a great time, but so is just swimming laps. Feeling the water hold me up as I exercise all those muscles pulling myself through the water is refreshing.
I also enjoy just floating in the pool, with my head laid back and the water holding me up as I listen to the sounds all around. In that moment, it is as if the cares of life slip away into the water. For a weightless moment there is peace, stillness and relaxation, just letting the water carry all the weight.
As the water holds me up, I am reminded that God has also promised to lift me up. He says in James, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10 NIV). What does it mean to humble yourself? It means to give yourself totally to the Lord, to trust him completely.
In the pool, if you want to float, you have to lay back and relax. You have to trust the water to hold you with minimal effort on your part. It’s hard the first time, we feel like we have to thrash and fight the water. But the more you relax and let the water carry you, the more you lay your head back and trust the water to hold you up, the easier it becomes.
Our walk with the Lord is the same way. We tend to fight and struggle, afraid to trust him. But when we let go a little bit, when we have a little faith, we feel his gracious hands begin to hold us up. The more we lean into him, the more we trust him, the more he lifts us up.
Trusting the Lord gives much more peace than floating in a pool. When we spend time with the Lord, in his word, at prayer, in church with his people, he refreshes us and renews us. Maybe you are feeling weighed down by the cares of the world today. Lean into Jesus, trust him and you will find the peace you need. Take a moment and allow yourself to float in God’s hands, he will always hold you up if you will trust him.
