Spencer County Cross Country had a busy week as they attended both the Mid-Ky Conference Championship and the DeSales Invitational in the space of three days.
The Mid-Ky Conference Championship was held in Nelson County Oct. 23 and Spencer County upset the local teams and spectators by coming away with first, second, and third place team finishes.
The girls’ varsity team took top honors with a score of 35 points, while the boys varsity won second place with 54 points, and the SCMS boys team took third place with 76 points.
Chelsey Talley won the varsity girls 3.1 mile run with a time of 21:07, and was named Conference Runner of the Year. Christina Shawver placed 2nd, Laura Klotz 6th, Whitney O’Dell 8th, and Bethany Crews finished 18th for their combined score of 35 points. Talley, Shawver, and Klotz were named to the All-Conference team.
The SCHS boys’ team won their first ever team trophy, placing 2nd in team scoring and beating Nelson County by just one point. Sam Meredith finished 2nd in 17:05, Cory Kleinjan 3rd, Jacob Clawsen 14th, Travis O’Dell 17th, Andrew Sharp 18th, Mike Williams 27th, and Gabriel Monnot finished 35th for their total of 54 points. Both Meredith and Kleinjan were named to the All-Conference team.
Charliann Garcia won the girls middle school run with a time of 12:43 and was named Conference Runner of the Year, while teammate Adrian Gregory finished 2nd in the 1.8 mile race.
The boys’ middle school team placed 3rd in team scoring led by Korey Searcy’s 5th place finish. Steven Tiller placed 12th, Jack Meredith 13th, Noah Williamson 17th, Kaleb Spalding 19th, and Josh Talley finished in 25th place for their combined score of 76 points. Searcy was named to the All-Conference team as were Adrian Gregory and Charliann Garcia.
Next, the team took to the hills of McNeely Lake Park in Louisville for the DeSales Invitational October 25, where the SCHS girls took second place team honors.
Christina Shawver led the team with a 2nd place finish and a time of 20:30. She combined with Chelsey Talley 5th, Laura Klotz 10th, Whitney O’Dell 14th, and Bethany Crews 29th for the team total of 44 points, just 8 points behind regional rival North Oldham.
Charliann Garcia placed 2nd in the girls’ middle school run with a time of 16:07, while teammate Adrian Gregory finished 25th of 115 runners in the 2.4 mile race.
SCMS 7th grader Travis O’Dell placed 18th in the boys’ middle school run, and freshman Sam Meredith finished 17th in the boys’ varsity 3.1. mile run.
November 1 the middle school runners will travel to Lexington for the KTCCCA Middle School State Championship, while the high school team will rest and prepare for Regionals on November 8.
