With nearly a month left in the season, the Spencer County Lady Bears have surpassed their win total from a year ago following a 55-37 victory over the North Oldham Lady Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off a tough 39-32 loss to Shelby County the night before in which they let a lead slip away at the end, the Lady Bears captured a big lead early and maintained it to pick up their eighth win of the season.
Mackenzie Myers, who was honored before tip-off for joining the 1,000 point club, opened the game with a 3-pointer and that lead jumped to 9-4 when MacKenzie Keown hit a jumper late in the quarter. A Kaylan Nigh bucket and a Lydia Tackett free throw made it 12-5 at the end of one period.
In the second quarter, Nigh opened with two quick buckets, Myers hit another 3-pointer and a drive and basket by McKenna Pfeiffer ballooned the lead to 22-6 and the Lady Bears were on their way to holding a commanding 28-10 halftime lead.
Krysten Barlow scored the first two baskets of the second half for the Lady Bears as they refused to let the visitors mount any serious rally to get back into the game. Two baskets late by Myers and Nigh pushed the lead to 43-24 to start the fourth quarter, which proved to be much of the same as the Lady Bears secured the 55-37 victory.
Myers led the way with 16 points with Nigh adding 10. Pfeiffer added eight, Keown chipped in with seven, Delicia Brown scored six, Barlow added five with Niqua Downs scoring two and Tackett scoring one.
Spencer County was scheduled to host Bethlehem on Monday night and Carroll County on Tuesday before traveling to Bullitt Central on Friday at 6 p.m.. They will be at Frankfort next Monday night at 7:30.
