Taylor Stevenson-Tolle, a senior at Mercy Academy, won the 4-H & FFA Grand Champion Market Steer and Grand Champion Heifer at the 2010 Kentucky State Fair.  This is her third grand champion steer, and the first time she’s secured both champion steer and champion heifer in the same year.  Taylor’s steer is crossbred out of Heat Wave, her champion heifer is a chianina breed which also won grand champ chianina in the open show.  Taylor also had the AOB champion breed heifer and the Commercial champion breed heifer in the junior shows.  Taylor has been a member of Spencer County 4-H  for 9 years.

The 106th Kentucky State Fair’s 4-H and FFA Sale of Champions concluded with $124,500 raised during the live auction, the third largest sum raised in its 31-year history.  The winning steers, hogs, lambs and goats featured in the Sale of Champions are exhibited by 4-H and FFA members during the Kentucky State Fair. The youth exhibitors receive 60 percent of the purchase price, 30 percent is distributed to the respective class winners, and the remaining 10 percent is divided equally among Kentucky 4-H and FFA.  Purchasers for the champion steer include KY Farm Bureau Insurance, Kentucky Cattleman’s Association, Kentucky Livestock Marketing, Whayne Supply Co, Cargill, and Greenhill Productions.  The Supreme Grand Champion Steer sold for $26,000.

As part of her senior community service project, Taylor and her group, have chosen to work with Kosairs Children’s Hospital to advocate for pediatric cancers.  They are in the beginning stages of their involvement and are looking forward to providing a backpack with some fun activities for the children at Kosairs with cancer.   By visiting and spending time with the kids, they will be able to better assess what types of items to include.

Taylor has committed 5% of her earnings towards this project and hopes to bring a smile to the kids and families during a very difficult and stressful time.  If anyone would like to donate to Taylor’s service project, please contact Mollie Tichenor at the Spencer County Extension office.

Proud parents are Marc Renee and Brent Tolle of Taylorsville.
