Last Friday night, under the lights of the high school, the Spencer County Middle School football team completed their sweep of winning the MKAC regular season title and the conference tournament title by beating the Bardstown Middle School Tigers 22-6.

A fired up Grizzly offense took the open kickoff and drove right down the field and scored on a short run by Trenton Calvert to make it 6-0. Each team’s defenses then forced turnovers and stoppage on downs.

As the first half drew to a close, the Grizzlies were backed up deep in their territory, when on the last play, Will Edwards, while rolling to his right for a pass, found some daylight and took off as he zig-zagged down the field for a 70-yard score.

Clay Culver successfully kicked the extra point to make it a 14-0 half time lead. Each team’s defenses ruled the third quarter as neither team could mount a serious drive.

The fourth quarter opened up with the Grizzlies pinning the Tigers down inside the 5-yard line on a 40-yard punt from Will Edwards.

The Grizzlies defense blitzed and forced a costly turnover for the visiting Tigers.

Two plays later, Zack Patton dove in from one yard out sealing the victory for SCMS. With this victory, the 2010 Grizzlies became only the second team in school history to win both titles.
