Helping the Henry family

While the Henry family has been taking time off from work to stay by their critically-injured son in the hospital, neighbors have been hard at work thinking of ways to help.

Just days after 15-year-old Nicholas Henry collided with an SUV while riding his dirt bike, fellow residents along Whitetail Drive set up an account at Citizens Union Bank to help his family with what they see as an inevitable financial strain.

“It’s an amazing neighborhood,”said Cheryl Dalehite. “We celebrate each other’s birthdays, our kids’ birthdays and graduations. It’s a unique neighborhood and I’m glad to be a part of it.”

Neighbors are also planning a yard sale to benefit the Henry family. The event has been scheduled for Saturday, June 27 at Lighthouse Baptist Church. Anyone wishing to donate items for sale can contact Kenny Warner at 477-0727, or drop off the items at 245 Whitetail Drive.

Dalehite said all the proceeds from the yard sale will go to the family.

Marla Henry did not seem surprised to discover that residents along her street are so concerned for her son.

“It’s a tight neighborhood,” she said.

Since the accident occurred last Tuesday, Henry said that Nicholas has finally been taken off the respirator and is breathing on his own. Occassionally, the family will see a glimpse of recovery as Nicholas opens his eyes or gives a “thumbs up”.

“He’s a whole lot better, but we still have a long haul,” said Henry.

The mother said despite previous reports in the Spencer Magnet, her son was wearing a helmet. It just got knocked off when he impacted with the vehicle.

Last week, it was reported that Nicholas was hit when he drove his dirt bike into the path of an oncoming SUV. The teenager’s injuries were so severe that local EMS called for a helicopter to fly Nicholas to University of Louisville Hospital.

Henry said doctors expect Nicholas to remain in the hospital for at least a month. He is currently in stable condition.

Anyone wishing to contribute financially to the family can donate to the Nicholas Henry Fund at any branch of Citizens Union Bank.
