Students in Jason Cox’s class at Hillview Academy spent Friday afternoon packing boxes full of goodies for troops serving in Afghanistan.

Students in sixth through ninth grade collected items for a couple of weeks to send to troops, including Keith Travis, a 1989 Spencer County High School graduate.
The students sent one box to Travis, and several others for Travis to share with others at his base, Cox said.
As part of the project, students were able to hone in on their writing skills by composing thank you letters.
Over the past few weeks, the students collected instant meals, such as macaroni and cheese and ramen noodles, as well as assorted greeting cards, at the request of the troops, Cox said.
Cox said each year he tries to get students to focus on community involvement, and being able to help out a Spencer County native serving overseas just makes it all the more rewarding.
