The Spencer County Lady Bears said goodbye to a couple of seniors Wednesday night but were not able to secure a victory as they fell to Trimble County, 47-36.

Jayme Thomas and Elizabeth Whitely were honored prior to the tip-off of the varsity match-up and they will end their high-school careers in the 30th District Tournament opening round game against Shelby County tonight at 6 p.m.

However, they had one last chance for a victory at home in a season that’s been short on wins.

Spencer County got off to a slow start, trailing 12-7 after the first quarter and Trimble County held to that lead the rest of the way. Spencer County proved competitive as they hung around within striking distance, but were never able to close the gap.

Trailing 31-24 heading into the final quarter, Trimble County was able to hit free-throws and convert baskets to maintain their lead and send the Lady Bears to their 19th loss of the season.

MacKenzie Myers led the way with 13 points on the night while Thomas added 11 in her last home game. Sydney Spencer scored six points, McKenna Pfeiffer added four, MacKenzie Smith had two and Kayla Barmore scored one.

The girls will face a rematch with Shelby County in tonight’s District game. Spencer County hung with the Lady Rockets on the road back in January, before dropping a 48-34 decision. Last year, the Lady Bears were the story of the tournament as they beat Shelby County on their way to advancing to the 8th Region tournament.
