LETTER: ‘Best explanation of the Tea Party’

-A A +A

The political left in this country has tried to define the Tea Party in a negative light. We’ve been called “jihadists, terrorists, arsonists, radicals and anarchists.” Senator Mitch McConnell has called the Tea Party “traitors” and said that we “need to be punched in the nose.” The very best explanation I’ve heard was on a recent interview of Matt Bevin on WHAS radio. I will paraphrase what Mr. Bevin had to say and add some thoughts of my own.
Every era in the history of America has had it’s own “Tea Party” movement, made up of ordinary citizens. For example:
The original Revolutionists were dissatisfied with the heavy handed government of King George -- ”Taxation Without Representation” and corrected what had become the norm. It was ordinary citizens who stepped forward.
The abolitionists recognized the grave injustice of slavery and corrected what had become the norm. It was ordinary citizens who stepped forward.
The Women’s Suffrage movement recognized voting injustice and corrected what had become the norm. It was ordinary citizens who stepped forward.
The Civil Rights movement recognized injustice toward black Americans and corrected what had become the norm. It was ordinary citizens who stepped forward.
The dangerous slide toward socialism/communism in America today is recognized and being fought by today’s ordinary citizens, called the “Tea Party.” We the people (John Q. Public), have stepped up to the bat to be the Paul Reveres who wake up the rest of the country. World history has proven over and over that when socialism creeps into any country, freedom is lost. It all sounds so good and so “fair” in the beginning-- it’s an easy sell to “divide and conquer” an uneducated public. This country has not been more divided since the Civil War.
Unfortunately, we as a country, have allowed our schools and universities to be transformed into propaganda camps to dumb down the general population — the very places where true education on communism should be taught, so that history will not repeat itself. Communism always brings death of citizens and destruction of freedom.
Once again, it is ordinary citizens who are stepping forward.
What each of these examples have in common is that ordinary citizens come “out of the woodwork” to serve when necessity calls, and most disappear back into their ordinary lives after the goal is achieved. My fear is that so many of our younger generation have been dumbed down to the point that it will take several generations in the future to bring America back to an understanding of how fragile freedom is, and how easily lost. My parents’ generation fought and won World War II in a matter of a few years. Then it was over, freedom won, and people went back to their previous lives. I wish that time would come soon, and I could go back to life before the Tea Party became necessary.
At age 62, I doubt that will happen in my lifetime, so I must remain vigilant for the sake of my children, my grandchildren and yours.
