LETTER: Editorial was 'hateful and hurtful'

Letter to the Editor of a newspaper, but I was so shocked to see the article concerning the local school board last week, that I feel I need to express my opinion.

First of all, I do not believe Robin Bass has any idea about the amount of monies which are needed to run the public schools in Spencer County. If she had taken the time to look up the information of expenditures provided, by county, on the State of Kentucky’s Board of Education website, she would have seen that the information the local board provided is the facts.

The information very plainly shows that the Spencer County Board of Education had expenditures of $20,052,165 for the 2008-2009 school year, and $21,609,783 (unaudited) for the 2009-2010 school year. This information clearly shows, taking rising expenses into consideration, that the Spencer County School Board will probably need a minimum of $22 million to get through the 2010-2011 school year.

Spencer County already spends less on our children than many other counties, and we also have a lower tax rate than many other counties. This is our children we are talking about! If I’m going to pinch my pennies and pay additional taxes for anyone, I would want it to be for our children.

Ms. Bass may want to consider entering her name to serve on her child’s school Site-Based committee. I served on one in Bullitt County several years ago, and it was a very big eye opener for me. I was shocked to see how tight the school budgets in Kentucky run!  Those fund- raisers that the schools all have every year – they depend on those to buy much needed supplies such as copy paper, etc., for their classrooms. Teachers even often spend their own money for supplies in their classrooms.

In closing, Ms. Bass stated that she was disappointed by the “tactics” the school board used. I am surprised at her article which seemed to try and make the school board members look like a bunch of liars and thieves. Those people serve on that board because they want to help our children. Next time, she might try to gather information before writing such a hateful and hurtful article.
