LETTER: Help save Light Up Salt River

My family is fairly new to Spencer County, being here just over five years. We plan to be here the rest of our life. We go to church here. We bank here. We grocery shop here. We go to Dr. Oder and our dog goes to Dr. Shelley.

When the Magnet had an article that Sid Kirsch would like to have some new people to help with a committee, I called her and was told that Light Up Salt River was being held in a few months and I could be helpful there.

I have been on the committee for the last four years. Light Up Salt River had been very successful for 14 years until 2009 when it poured rain day and night. But, we still had to have the fireworks or lose our money.

The following year was extremely hot and some of the booths that signed up to be there, did not come. Once again we lost money.

It’s a big weekend for the marina. The boats cover the lake to watch the fireworks, but they have never donated a dime to help with the cost of the fireworks.

For Light Up Salt River to be a success, we need help from every business. We have a few contributors that we can depend on, but we need everyone’s help. If every business could donate $30, it would go a long way toward the fireworks.

The Light Up Salt River committee is doing what we can to raise money. We will have a booth at Octoberfest this weekend and plan to have several fundraisers from January to May. If the community pulls together, 2010 will not be the last year for Light Up Salt River.

This has been a family event for the last 16 years with music, booths, food, fireworks, something for everyone. Help us save Light Up Salt River.
