LETTER: Keeping prom on campus isn’t the answer

-A A +A

Concerning the prom. The actions of the school board to force the prom to be held at the high school shows a great lack of confidence in what we have taught our children. Having the prom in the crime ridden west end of Louisville lacks basic knowledge of what goes on in that part of town. There are plenty  hotels and country clubs to hold these events in safer areas of our world. I also think the liability issue is a pretty lame excuse not to hold a formal event outside the school. Sporting events are scheduled outside the school nearly every week. They, like the prom, are not mandatory and the school board doesn’t get sued if little Johnny runs off the road. I think the greater liability is these kids won’t have a special place to remember where their prom was held and their very own school board was at fault. I think your greatest liability, off campus, is if you provide a bus. The kids go out and have dinner with their friends before the prom. Let them have some fun. The parents understand there are risk in them growing up.
As for the dance floor at the school, I put nearly every screw in that floor two years ago when my son was graduating. If that floor is still at the high school, I would like to see it memorialized at the next bonfire.
High school is to prepare our kids for the world yet the board wants them confined to a space they see every day at school. Seems to me like the board members are the ones that need to grow up.
