LETTER: Once a proud Democrat

I have been having discussions with several Democrats lately and I am amazed at what I’ve been hearing.  Let me begin by saying that I was a registered Democrat for 25 years.  I have been a Republican for only 19 years. What happened? The Democrat party went too far to the left and it has continued the drift.

My life began in humble surroundings in an old farm house in Worthington, Ky. 62 years ago. We were poor, but Mom and Dad took us to church whenever the doors were open, and showed us love. They lived a life that reflected the truths of the Bible to us children.  My daddy was a Democrat and my mother a Republican.  Dad and my mom’s father got into heated arguments about politics every election.  I couldn’t wait to turn 18 to be a voting American and a registered Democrat!  All seven of us children became Democrats.

The Bible was an important part of my life.  Some people tell me it is man made and a myth.  Yes, man wrote it, but God inspired it.  What does this have to do with politics? The Democrat Party is now telling me that the people who wrote the Constitution were not Christians. After years and years of being taught in public schools how religious our forefathers were, now they are changing the history books to how they want it to be. Barack Obama made the statement with pride – “We are no longer a Christian nation; we are now a nation of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, ...”

Our forefathers, and now our sons, have fought and died for the right for our nation to be a Christian nation and now I hear on the news that Christians are considered a greater threat to this country than the most radical Muslim terrorist. How far this nation has come from what our founding fathers intended it to be?

I have heard over and over “I am concerned about ME$!”  They are going to vote Democrat because of the economy, not about which candidate would be more capable to run the country. ‘ME’ is how the housing and loan industry got in the condition it is in now.  Not because of President Bush.  He never gave anyone a loan for a house they could not afford, and they knew they would not be able to pay for.  Unscrupulous loan companies, and people  with only ME in mind are the reason tax payers are bailing out the bankrupt and failing loan industry and banks.  Fannie May and Freddie Mack were the creation of the Democrat Party, and now they are saying the Republicans are the reason for the problem. It isn’t just what is in it for ME, it is about the future of America and what our children and grandchildren will inherit.

As a Christian I believe life begins at conception and is a sacred gift from God. Marriage is between a man and a woman sanctified by God The Democrat Party stopped believing that years ago. When I began voting as a child I was a proud Democrat, and I did not question the party.  With age came the realization that my beloved party no longer had the same ideas and moral judgement and I began to question where it was taking the America of my childhood.  When thinking through who to vote for, I must vote for the person and the party that puts ‘In God We Trust’ in America.  I did not leave the Democrat Party, but it left me standing on the right when it moved too far to the left.
