The body of Maxine Ethington was found Sunday afternoon next to her vehicle off Beckley Station Road near Middletown.
Shelbyville Police reported a body was found next to the car but would not identify that body. A family member later confirmed to The Sentinel-News that the body was believed to be Ethington’s. A coroner’s report was pending.
Shelbyville Police said no foul play is suspected. The car apparently still was engaged and had run out of gas after being driven off the road, more than 20 miles from Ethington’s home on Craig Ave. in Shelbyville.
Ethington, 87, had been missing since May 25, when family members reported her disappearance and that of her silver 2001 Buick Century. Her case has been the focus of an intense investigation and search. She suffered from dementia.
At 5:15 p.m. Sunday a resident saw a car in a ravine on private land near 1501 Piercy Mill Road and notified Louisville Metro Police. That vehicle was the Buick registered to Ethington.
Piercy Mill is off Beckley Station south of U.S. 60 in a hilly and less-developed area.
