Middle school cross country sees growth, good start to 2012 season

The Spencer County Middle School cross country team got off to a great start during its first meet Sept. 1.

Ten middle school boys participated in the Shelby County Invitational 3K and ran well enough to get a top five team finish. The boys’ team finished fifth out of 14.
Seventh-grader Drake Snider was the top male finisher for Spencer County. He came in 26th out of 102 with a time of 12:11.49.
Other Spencer Countians in the top 50 were seventh-grader Gavin Mattingly in 27th in 12:16.26, seventh-grader Michael Seawright in 33rd in 12:41.15, eighth-grader Joel Wafford in 42nd in 13:16.05, sixth-grader Jacob Seawright in 44th in 13:17.24 and sixth-grader Shane Henderson in 47th in 13:19.73.
Seventh-grader Kobe Mitchell finished the race in 13:41.49, sixth-grader Luke Kirk finished in 16:27.29, seventh-grader Justin Strothman in 16:27.80 and sixth-grader Steven Stayton in 20:18.52.
Two middle school girls participated in the Shelby County Invitational 3K, with seventh-grader Ali Henderson finished 24th out of 94 with a time of 13:07.30.
Seventh-grader Marin Bennett finished in 15:18.00.
This year’s cross country team has grown from three members to 18, said Coach Ricky Smith.
The team roster includes six girls (seventh graders Marin Bennett, Alexander Britton, Ali Henderson, Tab Martin and Paige Newson and eighth-grader Maddie Cook) and 12 boys (sixth graders Shane Henderson, Luke Kirk, Jacob Seawright and Steven Strayton, seventh-graders Kobe Mitchell, Michael Seawright, Drake Snider and Justin Strothman, and eighth-graders Cameran Curran, Hunter Detrich, Gavin Mattingly and Joel Wafford).
