The North Central District Health Department will give 1,000 free flu shots at a special vaccination clinic starting at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday October 6 at the Henry County High School at 1120 Eminence Road, New Castle.
The clinic will conclude after the 1,000 shots are given. All participation will be on a first-come first-served basis. Persons unable to attend the free flu shot clinic are able now to obtain their seasonal flu shot at the Spencer County Health Department at the cost of $20.00.
The vaccination clinic is an exercise designed to test the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Program, which, in part, is the ability of the leadership in the communities to vaccinate or provide medications in the event of a pandemic, bioterrorism exposure, natural disaster or other emergencies. Officials from Henry, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble counties will also participate in this exercise. Official participants include North Central District Health Department, Henry County Judge’s office, Henry County Emergency Management, state and local law enforcement, fire department, volunteers and the news media.
The shot to be given will be for the seasonal flu and will not protect against the H1N1 virus. The seasonal flu (Influenza) is a contagious disease spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing. Symptoms include fever, cough, headache, muscle aches and fatigue. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Kentucky Department of Public Health recommend an annual flu shot for adults and children who are at high risk of developing complications from influenza as well as anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu. The flu season for the state of Kentucky usually starts around late October to early November and receiving a season flu shot in this time range will keep a person protected throughout the flu season. Of course, the best protection against the flu and the H1N1 Virus is always hand washing and the use of soap and hand sanitizers along with other common sense ideas such as avoiding close contact with others who are or appear to be sick, reminding children to practice healthy hand- washing habits and getting your flu shot.
