It was a year in the making, but Boatworks Pro Shop finally celebrated their newly-finished addition just in time for the boating season.

“I think we’ve got one of the best boat shops in the state,” said Greg Loeser, who owns the Spencer County boat retail store with his wife, Patty and business partner Steve Tichenor. Since the in-board motor boat store opened 10 years ago just outside Taylorsville, boating enthusiasts have been traveling from as far away as Michigan and Mississippi to purchase high-end watercraft.

“We’re trying to make it (Boatworks) a destination,” said fellow owner Steve Tichenor. “People come to this area just to shop here. This pro shop is probably the largest in the state.”

In addition to MasterCraft and Caravelle powerboats, the store also features a full line of clothing, shoes and sunglasses conducive to the boating lifestyle. They also feature waterskiing and wakeboarding equipment specially designed for men, women and children.

“Wakeboarding is really growing in popularity,” said Tichenor.

Recently, Boatworks was instrumental in luring the MasterCraft Pro Tour to the area for a wakeboarding exhibition and competition. The event will be held at Freeman Lake in Elizabethtown July 18 and 19. Loeser said he would have loved to bring the event to Taylorsville Lake, but the lack of an adequate viewing area and inability to sell alcohol were  major factors in the site decision.

At a ribbon cutting ceremony  May 15, many local officials were on hand to celebrate Boatworks’ new 3,000 sq. ft. addition. The two-story structure is designed with walls of windows to allow natural light into the space. Inside, customers will find a brightly-colored showroom with a cozy loft above for lounging.

Tichenor said it’s almost hard to believe that they started out as a small fishing boat company in 1999.

“People buying high-end products expect more,” said Loeser. “You can’t find anything like this in a three-hour drive.”

Boatworks is located at 12 Highview Drive just off KY 44 East of Taylorsville. Typical store hours are 8 a.m until 6 p.m. For more information, check out kyboatworks.com or call the store at 502-477-2628.
