James Matthew Jeffiers, pictured at left, of Spencer County FFA Chapter in Kentucky, was named national winner during the National FFA Convention, October 19-22, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excelled as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while they gained hands-on career experience. Beef Production - Placement is one of 47 FFA proficiency award categories offered at local, state and national levels. Beef Production - Placement proficiency award program is sponsored by Cattlco and Midwest PMS, as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Jeffiers received a plaque and a check for $500 as a national finalist and after being named national winner of the Beef Production - Placement award area, received an additional $500 and plaque during a special ceremony at the national FFA convention. Jeffiers was hired on the spot for his job at an angus beef farm. During his experiences, he has worked with breeding cattle through artificial insemination and embryo transfer. He also learned to become stronger at disease detection and administering vaccinations to the cattle. Jeffiers is supported by his parents, Brad and Connie, and his FFA advisors, Darryl Matherly and Bland Baird.
