Spencer County High School Gifted and Talented Education and Social Studies Department, together with Kentucky Chautauqua, presented Private William Greathouse: Proud Kentucky Militiaman, on Nov. 1 at the SCHS Library Media Center.

AP U.S. History students, along with other Grade 10 and 11 G/T students, enjoyed Harry Smith’s portrayal of this young Kentuckian who played such a significant role in Kentucky’s history.
When Kentucky Governor Isaac Shelby issued a call to arms, Pvt. William Greathouse was one of the 3,500 Kentucky men to respond. Just a teenager, Greathouse mustered in on Aug. 24, 1813, in Nelson County.
Harry Smith, a resident of Cynthiana, portrays Private William Greathouse. Harry is the fourth member of the Smith family to participate in the Kentucky Chautauqua program. His parents, Ed and Betsy Smith, along with his older brother Ethan, are seasoned Kentucky Chautauqua performers. Harry, and his brother Ethan, are the youngest people ever selected for Kentucky Chautauqua. Harry attends Harrison County High School.
