Three SCHS runners represented their school at the KHSAA AA State Cross Country meet on November 14.
The tough, slow course at the Kentucky Horse Park, along with the unseasonably warm weather, had many runners struggling to perform, and several others falling out of the race altogether.
Christina Shawver and Charliann Garcia managed to fare well in the girl’s 5K in spite of the difficult conditions. Shawver completed the run in 20:39, finishing in 7th place. Garcia wasn’t far behind in 17th place with a time of 21:15. Shawver’s finish earned her a trip to the awards podium, as the top 15 finishers in each race were presented with medals.
Unfortunately, in the boy’s race, Cory Kleinjan didn’t fare as well as the girls did. Struggling with illness, Kleinjan was a front runner early in the race but fell further back as the race progressed. He crossed the finish line in 43rd place with a time of 18:19.
Now that the high school season is over, these young runners will begin training for AAU Nationals, which will be held in Orlando next month.
