Spencer County students go back to school Aug. 7

The smell of freshly sharpened No. 2 pencils and bright, waxy crayons will soon fill the air as the first day of school is quickly approaching for area schools.
Parents and students should check out the information below so they can feel a bit more prepared about opening day and everything that comes with it. Spencer County Public Schools will welcome students back Aug. 7 and kindergarten-eighth grade students return to Spencer Christian School on Aug. 20. Spencer County Preschool students in the AM session start back Aug. 21, while PM session students start Aug. 22. Spencer Christian Preschool students return to class Sept. 3.
Spencer County Preschool
Spencer County Preschool is located on Taylorsville Elementary School’s campus in downtown Taylorsville and is directed by Todd Russell and serves qualifying Spencer County children. Children in the preschool program must be screened prior to enrollment.
The preschool is hosting a screening Aug. 9 beginning at 8 a.m. Russell said parents must call to schedule a time for themselves and their child to come for a screening by calling 477-3210.
Other important upcoming dates for the preschool include a parents-only preschool orientation Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. in the TES cafeteria. The open house for family and students is Aug. 19 from 2-6 p.m.
Spencer County Preschool classes meet Monday-Thursday and students are assigned to the AM or PM session. The AM session meets from 8:45-11:45 a.m., while the PM session meets from 12:30-3:30 p.m.

Taylorsville Elementary School
Taylorsville Elementary School is located at 206 Reasor Ave. in Taylorsville. TES students, faculty and staff have an exciting year ahead as they welcome new principal MariAnn Arnold who started last week.
Arnold said she is still familiarizing herself with the community and school but is already excited about the direction in which TES is headed.
During the school year, TES’ doors open at 8:15 a.m. with morning assembly beginning at approximately 8:35 a.m. School begins at 8:50 a.m. and dismisses at 3:35 p.m. Buses unload and load in the courtyard area at the school. Car riders load and unload at the Jefferson Street entrance, and public traffic is asked not to use that area of Jefferson Street during school hours.
Important upcoming TES dates include open house for 1-5 grades Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. and kindergarten open house Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

Spencer County Elementary School
Spencer County Elementary School is located at 1265 Mount Washington Road in Taylorsville and its students, faculty and staff will also be welcoming a new principal this school year. Mark Thomas joined SCES this summer. Gina McGinnis is the school’s assistant principal.
SCES doors open at 8:15 a.m. and the bell for classes to begin rings at 8:50 a.m. Classes end at 3:35 p.m.
Car riders load and unload at the front entrance of the building, while buses load and unload at the south side of the building.
SCES’ open house is scheduled for July 30 from 5:30-7 p.m. for kindergarten and Aug. 1 for 1-5 grades.  Students will be able to meet their teachers, bring in supplies and see their classrooms. Information will be available for car rider numbers and from the transportation department, cafeteria, PTA, school nurse and more.
In addition to welcoming a new principal, SCES also has named Ashley Phillips as the school counselor. Phillips previously served as a SCES first grade teacher.

Spencer County Middle School
Spencer County Middle School is located at 1263 Mount Washington Road in Taylorsville and is located behind SCES.
The school is led by principal Ed Downs and assistant principals Erin Demyan and Millie Blandford.
SCMS opens its doors at 7:10 a.m. and classes begin at 7:40 a.m. Dismissal is at 2:25 p.m. Although pickup and drop off procedures are the same as in years past, Demyan asked that parents do not drop their child off in the parking lot, but utilize the car rider line. Car riders use the rear entrance and buses load and unload in the front of the school.
There are also no changes in dress code, but Demyan reminded students that spaghetti strap tank tops are not allowed and skirts or shorts must not exceed four inches above knees. Hats and bandanas are also not allowed.
SCMS open house for seventh and eighth grade students is Aug. 1 from 6-7:30 p.m. and open house for sixth grade students is Aug. 5 from 6-7:30 p.m. Demyan said students will be given their class schedules, meet teachers and visit classrooms.
“We have a ton of extracurricular activities including academic clubs and athletic teams,” Demyan said. “It is wise to join an extracurricular and become part of the school.”

Spencer County High School
Spencer County High School is located at 520 Taylorsville Road in Taylorsville and is led by principal Curt Haun and assistant principals Steven Rucker and Mary Lynn Martin.
SCHS’ doors open at 7:10 a.m. and classes start at 7:40 a.m. Breakfast is served from 7:15-7:35 a.m.
Haun said pickup and drop off procedures are the same and any students wishing to drive to school must purchase a parking permit. Buses unload in the large lot facing McDonald’s, while students park in the side lot. The school’s open house/back-to-school night is scheduled for July 30 from 6-8 p.m. The freshman and juniors will meet from 6-7 p.m. and the sophomores and seniors will meet from 7-8 p.m.
Students and parents will be able to pick up class schedules and pay school fees, tour the building and meet teachers.
Haun said SCHS is offering its new health services program this year, which offers opportunities to students who previously would have had to travel to neighboring counties to obtain vocational and technical training in the health services field.

Hillview Academy
Hillview Academy is Spencer County Schools’ alternative school that services students who struggled to be successful in a traditional classroom setting.
The school, located at 404 Main Cross, sits atop a hill overlooking TES and most of Taylorsville. It is led by principal Bob Hafendorfer, who promotes what he calls the “successful six”: kindness, caring, respect, knowledge, trust and responsibility.
Students are referred to Hillview on an individual basis and will receive specific care and attention to help them succeed academically.
Hillview Academy follows the middle and high school schedule, with class starting at 7:45 a.m. and ending at 2:35 p.m.
Hillview students adhere to a strict dress code, and safety is one of the school’s top priorities.

Spencer Christian School
Spencer Christian School is a private school serving children from preschool through sixth grade. The school is tuition-based and is located at 5720 Taylorsville Road in Fisherville. It is currently housed in Spencer Christian Church.
Spencer Christian’s classes meet three days a week, Tuesday-Thursday. Its preschool program is half day and morning and afternoon sessions are offered. The school’s unique three-day program partners with and trains parents to educate their children outside the classroom.
Morning preschool classes meet from 9 a.m. until noon and afternoon preschool classes meet from 1 until 3:30 p.m. Kindergarten classes begin at 9 a.m. and dismiss at 1:30 p.m. All elementary and middle grades meet from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
