The SCHS track team attended their first meets of the season last week, and already have several runners featured in the AA Top 20 rankings. The Shelby County All-Comers on March 24 was the first meet ever for many newcomers to SCHS Track & Field, including sophomore Erico Smith, who placed 6th in the 100 meter dash and 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.09. Smith is currently ranked 4th in the AA 100 meter rankings and 8th in the 200 meter after his debut performance.
Cory Kleinjan and Sam Meredith also cracked the top 15 in AA rankings after their performances in the 1600 and 800 meter runs.
Meredith finished 5th in the mile with a time of 4:54, and Kleinjan placed 6th in the 800 meter run in 2:12. Kleinjan is also ranked 8th in the 3200 meter run after running his best time of 10:30.
The girls team pulled off a major upset in the 4 x 800 meter relay contest, taking first place by defeating Shelby County on their home track, with a time of 10:58. Charliann Garcia, Whitney O’Dell, Chelsey Talley, and Christina Shawver combined to set this new school record, and earned a No. 2 ranking in the process.
Talley also placed 2nd in the mile run, and 2nd in the 800 meter run, with Shawver right behind her in 3rd. Garcia followed in 4th, and O’Dell finished 8th with a time of 2:53.
The girls won the 4 x 800 relay again at the Western Hills Open on March 26. There Shawver also placed 3rd in the mile with a time of 5:58, and Talley finished 3rd in the 800 meter run.
The boys 4 x 800 relay team finished 4th in 9:22, at Western Hills, while Cory Kleinjan finished the mile run in 4:49 to take 2nd place. Kleinjan also placed 2nd in the two mile run with teammate Sam Meredith on his heels in third place with a time of 10:41.
The SCHS track team will be back in action after Spring Break. On April 7, they’ll attend the Oldham County All-Comers where the team will face stiff competition from regional foe North Oldham, among other top teams.
