Spencer County’s cross country season came to a close in the cold, rainy conditions at the KHSAA State Championship in Lexington. The girls team managed to place 5th in team scoring in spite of having two runners with injuries. Bethany Crews and Adrian Gregory both suffered injuries mid-week. Gregory ran through the pain but was nowhere near her usual performance, while Crews was on crutches and unable to attend. In spite of these disappointing setbacks the team was just 7 points out of third place and certainly would have been in contention for first or second place under better circumstances. Coaches Seabolt and Talley regretted the terrible timing of the injuries, but are encouraged that the team was so close to the top, and are hopeful for their chances again next year.

Christina Shawver led SCHS with an 11th place finish in 20:17, Charliann Garcia placed 19th, Chesley Talley 21st, Laura Klotz 69th, Whitney O’Dell 93rd, and Adrian Gregory 171st. These scores combined for 157 points and their 5th place team finish. Winning team South Oldham was the only team from their Region to beat the SCHS girls who will rest for a few weeks before beginning training for the upcoming track season.

Cory Kleinjan finished 20th in the boys AA State Championship race with a time of 17:16 in the 3.1 mile run.

Sam Meredith placed 51st in 18:03. The boys team will also take some time off before preparing for the 2009 track season.
