Track team brings home the medals

The SCHS track team wrapped up their season at the AA State  Championship at the University of Louisville on May 22.  Over 2,000 athletes from eighty schools competed in 18 track and field events, giving their all for themselves and their schools.

The girls 4 x 800 meter relay team looked nervous but focused as they toed the line in the first event of the day.  They ran to a 7th place finish earning Spencer’s first medal of the day with a time of 10:25.  Charliann Garcia, Whitney O’Dell, Christina Shawver, and Chelsey Talley combined for this school record time, knocking 15 seconds off their time from Regionals.  Garcia then ran the 1600 meter run, finishing 14th overall in 5:48.  In the last race of the day, Christina Shawver placed 8th in the 3200 meter run, earning a medal with her time of 12:25.

In the boys 3200 meter run, Sam Meredith battled to a 9th place finish with a time of 10:11.  Cory Kleinjan crushed many of his competitors in the one mile run.  With a time of 4:35, he placed 5th and earned a medal.  Kleinjan and Meredith also combined with Drew Abell and Mike Williams in the boys 4 x 800 meter relay.  A time of 9:06 earned the boys a 19th place finish overall.  Erico Smith also scored for the boys team placing 4th  in the 100 meter dash and earning a medal with his time of 11:17.

So with medals earned in four events, the SCHS track team can be proud of their most successful State meet ever. The runners will take a well deserved break then begin to focus on the upcoming cross country season, where they will strive to continue their winning ways.
