The Spencer County boys picked up their first win of the season Monday night with a 8-2 victory over Jeffersontown.
Coach Paul Taylor said his team returned to their four defender, 5 midfielder and one striker strategy and was able to take a quick 2-0 lead after goals from Thibault Golliard and Brandon Taylor.
Jeffersontown tied it up with two goals of their own, but freshman Cody Coomes answered with another goal for the Bears who took a 3-2 lead into halftime. Taylor said he stressed better defense in the second half, and his squad responded.
Brandon Taylor scored his second goal of the night to make it 4-2 and then the route was on as Josh Helfrich, Nick Dysinger, Cody Ingram and Jacob Lanham all scored in the second half.
Taylor also credited Dustin Wolz for getting some good shots on goal and said Derek Clemens spelled regular goalie Austin Jucoff for a spell in the second half.
“We were able to play a number of young players a significant amount of time,” said the coach.
The win moved the Bears to 1-3 on the season, following a tough 6-3 loss to Bullitt East last Thursday.
Spencer County actually took an early 2-0 lead in that game on goals by Coomes and Taylor, but Bullitt East knotted the score at 2 before the half. Spencer took another one goal lead early in the second half but Bullitt East rallied for four second-half scores.
Spencer County will be hosting Collins on Thursday night and will be playing in a tournament in Carroll County on Saturday. They’ll be at Fort Knox next Wednesday and home again against Henry County next Thursday.
