The Spencer County High School Weight Team recorded its highest finish to date with a 3rd place finish at the Fern Creek High School “Rumble in the Jungle”. Fern Creek’s weight meet had a total of 14 teams competing in the bench press, power clean, and squat. Spencer County was in position to win the weight meet outright, but some late scratches on the squat cost them some valuable team points and individual finishes.

“We are very pleased with how our student-athletes performed today. Obviously we are excited about the team finishing in third place, but we are even more excited about these young men increasing their strength and recording personal best” said Coach Wes Napper. “We are positioning ourselves well for the state meet. We missed a state championship by one point last year. Our men are working hard to make sure that that doesn’t happen again.”

Some of Spencer County’s young men did exceptionally well at the Rumble in the Jungle. Nick Risen set two meet records for the 155 lbs weight class with a best bench press of 285 lbs and a best power clean of 225 lbs. Nick also picked up the Heaviest Bench Press award for the lighter six classes.

Erico Smith set one meet record for the 175 lbs weight class with a best power clean of 245 pounds. Erico also picked up the Heaviest Power Clean award for the lighter six classes.

The weight team now has a two week layoff prior to the March 14th State Power Lifting Championship at Central Hardin High School.
