Final Truck tug of the year
The final truck tug of the year will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Spencer County Fairgrounds. Come support your local tugger!
Spencer County Saddle Club Poker Run at Taylorsville Lake
The Spencer County Saddle Club would like to invite you to join them at Taylorsville Lake on Saturday, (rain date October 19) for a Poker Run. Signups start at noon at the day ride lot, with the ride starting at 1 p.m. Entry fee will be $5 per hand and everyone is welcome to come and join in the fun. Benefit Auction/Dance
A benefit auction and dance for Debra Brown will be held Saturday at the American Legion, Post 288 in Bloomfeild for $5 per person. The auction will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. The dance will be from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. There will also be an all you can eat dinner provided (drinks sold separately). Debra was injured in a car accident on June 27,2008. All money raised will be used to help her pay medical and personal bills.
Spencer County Parks Basketball signups
Spencer County Parks and Recreation will be holding basketball signups on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Waterford Park and on Monday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Ray Jewell Park. Advisory Council Meeting
The Spencer County Family Resource Center and Youth Service Center will be having their Advisory Council meeting at noon, Thursday, October 23 at Taylorsville United Methodist Church. Voting machine inspection
The spencer County Board of Elections will be inspecting the voting machines for the November 4 general election thursday, October 23 at 9 a.m. at the courthouse in Taylorsville.
Trick or Treat on Main Street
Trick or Treat on Main Street will be held in downtown Taylorsville on October 31 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Be sure to bring your entire family for a fun-filled night.
Moonswiners defends title
Once again the Moonswiners, a professional barbecue team from Taylorsville will be defending their grand championship title at the landmark 20th Annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue on October 25.
The American teams will take on 16 international teams from Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Jamaica, Poland, Puerto Rico, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in Lynchburg Tenn.
The event has been dubbed the most prestigious competition in the world by competitors.

Spencer County Historical
and Genealogical Society
Katie Yates, a Spencer County High School senior, will give her presentation on “The City of Van Buren” at the October meeting of the Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society. Katie entered and won the Spencer County Historical Society’s essay contest. Those interested in learning about Spencer County’s history and the city of Van Buren are welcome to attend. The meeting will be Monday, October 27, at 7 p.m. at the Spencer County Library.
Auxiliary Essay Contest
It is once again time to set your thinking caps on and start working on your essay to have the opportunity to win a $30,000 or $10,000 scholarship. There are two essay contests. Applications may be picked up at the Spencer Magnet, the High School, or the Middle School.
Contest 1: Voice of Democracy is open to all high school students grades 9-12 to write and record their essay with this year’s theme being “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today’s Youth by”. The deadline for entries is October 29, 2008. Entries will be picked up at the High School or you may call Joyce Waterfill at 502-477-8103 for pickup. This contest is open to all students (home schooled, church schooled and public schools).
Contest 2: Patriot’s Pen is open to all students grades 6-8. You are to write a 300-400 word essay on the theme of “Why America’s Veterans Should Be Honored”. Deadline for entries is October 29, 2008. Entries will be picked up at the Middle School or you may call Joyce Waterfill at 502-477-8103 for pickup. This contest is also open to home schooled, church schooled and public school students.
Students will be judged at the local level, and if a winner, will then be judged at District level. If a winner at District level, the winner will be judged for State winner. The winner will receive a monetary award at each of the levels they win.
