Waterford Homecoming
Be sure to attend the Waterford homecoming September 20. Crafts and yard sales begin at 8:30 a.m. There will be a softball tournament at 9 a.m. and a cornhole tournament at 11:30 a.m. All the senior adults will be honored after the flag honor ceremony. All veterans will be honored after the flag presentation. Music will be provided by Don Dennis and the Good Ole Boys, Allen Price, The Lawson Brothers, Albert Lewis and Friends, and others. There will also be a silent auction and plenty of food. Bring your lawn chairs and be prepared to spend the day visiting with friends and neighbors.
Chief's Night Out
Residents of Taylorsville are invited to attend an evening with Taylorsville Police Chief Toby Lewis. During this meeting, residents will be informed of services that they have at their disposal from both police and fire services. Lewis will also be informing the city residents of the street closings and Octoberfest traffic detour routes. There will be a taser demo and question and answer period.

Taylorsville High School class of 1978
Taylorsville High School class of 1978 will be having their 30 year reunion

Spencer County Special Olympics Bowling
The Spencer County Special Olympics will have bowling practice Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at the Bluegrass Bowling Center in Shelbyville. Scores have to be turned in by October 8 so please try to come to at least one practice before then. Special Olympics is for anyone with a mental disability from ages 8 – 100. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in joining the team them join them for a good time. Practices will end on December 3. Competition for regionals is October 25 for regular and ramp bowlers in Lexington. The state games on December 6 are also in Lexington. You must compete in the state games. Clerk’s office closed
The Spencer County Clerk’s office (vehicle transfers etc.) will be closed Saturday due to the Taylorsville Heritage Festival in downtown Taylorsville. Regular office hours will resume Monday.
Knights Kafé
Knights Kafé will be open Friday and Saturday in front of the Tea Cup. They will be offering breaded shrimp, steak sandwiches, grilled brats. Grilled hotdogs, onions & green peppers, french fries, cheese fries, fried pickles, tea, lemonade, and bottled water. Come to the Taylorsville KY Heritage Festival and visit the Knights Kafé. All proceeds support local charitable endeavors of the Knights of Columbus.
Taylorsville Kentucky Heritage Festival
Come be part of the Taylorsville Kentucky Heritage Festival along Historic Main Street in Taylorsville September 19 and 20. This two-day event features something for everyone with plenty of music, arts and crafts, Civil War history and even a gourd gathering.
Friday, Sept. 19, will be kicked off with live folk and Bluegrass music at the Town Square beginning at 7 p.m. The food, fun and foot stomping will continue until 11 p.m.
Then on Saturday, come back for arts, crafts and many other vendors from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Main Street. A special showing by the Louisville Artisans Guild will be held next to the Sanctuary Arts Center. Live music begins at 12 p.m. and continues all day. The Clack Mountain String Band is scheduled to perform from 8 to 11 p.m. Put on your dancing shoes and join in an old fashioned square dance.
The Spencer County Extension office will host an antique farm history display in the Chamber of Commerce including antique tractors from the Salt River Antique Power Association. Free historic walking tours will begin at Town Square at 2 p.m. and again at 5 p.m.

Republican meeting
The next Republicans meeting will be September 18, at On The Way Cafe. Please arrive at 6 p.m. to eat, and the meeting starts at 7 p.m. We will put the final details to our September 27 Spencer County Pig Roast at the Spencer County Fairgrounds, and the October 4 Spencer County Homecoming. Come get involved in all the fun and excitement.
Benefit for Lou Gehrig’s Disease
A benefit for the ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) Association of Kentucky will be held from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. September 20 at Captain’s Cove, located at 144 Captain’s Cove Dr., in Taylorsville. Join in celebrating the life and memory of Dennis Faulkner at this benefit. There will be a cornhole tournament starting at noon (registration by 11 a.m.). There will be music all day by DJ Rick Faulkner. J.D. Shelburne will be performing at around 2 p.m.. There will be a silent auction with many items including UK football tickets, a Lou Gehrig Louisville Slugger jersey, a truckload of topsoil, UK and UL items, a weekend at Captain’s Cove Chalet or Lodge, a secret vacation trip, a guided tour of Shadwell Horse Farm (a farm owned by the Sheik of Dubai), and many theme baskets. There will be many children’s games and several raffles including a raffle for a registered miniature horse and a registered Appaloosa stallion. Make plans now to spend the day. Santa Basket/Gourd Classes
Janis Parker will be conducting a series of four classes October 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Red Scooter in which participants will make a Santa Basket/Gourd. Embroidery classes at the Red Scooter
The Red Scooter will be offering embroidery classes from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. October 8, 15, 22, and 29. These lessons will be on how to embroider flowers, stems, and leaves using different techniques. Classes will be $40 plus $5 for supplies. Register by September 22 to reserve your spot in the class. Stop by the Scooter and see what’s on display and sign up for the classes. Class size is limited.
Community Blood Drive
The American Red Cross will be having their Holiday Hero Spencer County Community Blood Drive Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Taylorsville First Baptist Church in the Fellowship Hall. Remember to eat iron-rich foods and drink plenty of water! Be a life saving Hero, donate blood.
Recycling event
The Spencer County High School’s National Honor Society will be sponsoring a community-wide recycling event Saturday, September 27, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m in the Spencer County Middle School bus parking lot. The middle school is located at 1263 Mt. Washington Road.
The following items can be recycled: cell phones, cell phone chargers, computer monitors, keyboards, cables, mice, CPUs/hard drives (these will be shredded off site), printers, ink jet cartridges, toner cartridges, fax machines, copiers, TV cable boxes, newspapers, magazines, phone books, textbooks, paper, cardboard, plastic jugs/bottles, aluminum cans, and clean tin cans.
The following items will not be accepted: radios, TVs or other electronics, tires, glass, paint and appliances.

AARP Driver Safety Course
Kings Baptist Church is having the AARP Driver Safety Refresher Course September 27 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Christian Life Center. The class will be taught by an AARP trained volunteer. This class will help lower your care insurance premium. This is geared for drivers age 50 and older, but the course is open to people of any age. You do not need to be an AARP member to attend this course. NO FINAL TEST TO PASS. The cost is $10 per person which may be paid at the door. Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society
The September meeting of the Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society will be September 22, at 7 p.m. at the Spencer County Library. Those interested in learning more about Spencer County's history and tracing their family trees are welcome to attend.
Octoberfest pageants
Octoberfest pageants will be held October 3, 2008 for the following age categories: Tiny Tots, ages 3-4; Little Mister and Miss, ages 5-8; Pre-teen, ages 9-12; Junior Miss, ages 13-15; and Miss Spencer, ages 16-19.
Entry fee for Tiny Tots will be $10, $15 for Little Mr. and Miss, and all others will be $20. Registration forms may be picked up from Carolyn Shields at Taylorsville City Hall. All entries must be in before September 22 and must include a recent photo (head and shoulder shot).
All contestants will receive a $200 scholarship to John Robert Powers Modeling School. Winners ages 5 and up will also receive a $1,500 scholarship to John Robert Powers Modeling School.

Dancing for Diabetes
Journey Fitness is hosting a Zumbathon for Juvenile Diabetes from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. September 27 at Spencer County Elementary School. The cost is a $10 donation to JDRF. This is a fun and interactive activity for ages 5 and up!

Spencer County Farm Bureau meeting
The Spencer County Farm Bureau annual meeting will be at 7 p.m. September 29 at the Spencer County Extension Office. A meal will be served.
Fire Safety Day
The Taylorsville-Spencer County Fire Department will be hosting their first annual Fire Safety Day October 4 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. during fire prevention week.
Come out and meet Sparky the Fire Dog and Pluggie the Fire Hydrant Robot. Children will also enjoy the Kids Fire Safety House and a Fire Dog bouncer.
At 2 p.m. firefighters will hold an auto extrication demonstration. Other highlights will be viewing over 20 fire trucks, a hazardous materials unit, the swift water/dive rescue unit and fire rescue boats.
Free food will also be provided while it lasts.

Enter your baby or toddler now for this coming Octoberfest Baby Contest to be held at 2 p.m. October 4.
Age categories are 6-12 months; 13-18 months; 19-24 months; and 25-36 months. Registration fee is $10. Registration forms may be picked up from Carolyn Shields at Taylorsville City Hall. The registration deadline is September 29, 2008, and must include a recent photo of the child.
There will be a photogenic portion to the contest so the picture you enter will be used for that purpose.

Voter registration deadline
The last day to register to vote in the November 4 General Election is October 6. Residents who are not registered may do so at the Spencer County Clerk’s office located in the Courthouse. Residents who are not sure of their voter status are encouraged to call the clerk’s office at 477-3215.

Floats needed for Veterans Day Parade
Calling all scouting groups, churches and organizations! Guard Duty needs your help this November honoring our service men and women at the Veterans Day Parade. They have lots of veterans and only a few floats to ride on, so gather up those red, white and blue decorations and get to work!
Guard Duty also has spaces available for vendors and game booths. All vendors must register with Guard Duty, Inc. at least three weeks prior this engagement and must provide insurance and license to sell.
In addition to the parade November 8, Guard Duty is also organizing honor ceremonies, a 5K Glory Run and Fun Walk, and military displays.

Farmers Market
Seasonal produce can be purchased straight from the farm every Wednesday and Saturday morning at the local farmers market. Help for addictions
Lighthouse Baptist Church offers a faith-based program design to help break the bonds of addiction. Meetings of Reformers Unanimous are held each Friday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the church, located at 88 Miller Road. Personal and group counseling are provided. Are you 65 years of age or over? Homeowners age 65 or over may be eligible to receive the homestead exemption if they reside in the home. This may reduce your real estate assessment on which your property tax bill is based. Are you receiving total disability payments? Lifelong Learning Center
The Spencer County Adult Education Program, located at 406 Main Cross St. in The Lifelong Learning Center, offers free Adult Basic Education Classes in reading, writing and math to any person in the community who would like to improve their basic academic skills. They help people prepare to pass the GED test, prepare for college or a job and qualify for a job-training program which is available to any person who has their high school diploma or GED. The Learning Center also offers free use of their computers and programs which can help people learn to type or use common office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. The Learning Center also administers the GED official practice test for free. The passing of this test is required by state law in order to be eligible to take the Official GED Test. Home Delivered Meals
The Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency provides home delivered meals to senior citizens through the Spencer County Senior Life Enrichment Center. Seniors aged 60 and over that are homebound and are unable to prepare a meal may be eligible to receive the service. If you are interested or know of a senior that could use the service, please call Linda at 477-8296 to complete an intake form over the phone. If you are chosen to receive the service, a home visit will be scheduled to complete the activation process. Multi-Purpose CAA has many other senior support services and they encourage you to call and ask about what might be available to assist you or your elderly loved ones. This project is funded, in part, under a contract with KIPDA and the KY Cabinet for Health and Family Services with funds from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Volunteers needed to deliver meals
Volunteers are needed to help with the home meal deliveries to our shut-ins. This requires a couple of hours one or more mornings a week based on your availability. Volunteers must provide their own transportation. There are also other volunteer opportunities available. Call Linda at Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency 477-8296.
