What’s Happening is intended for publicizing public meetings, notices, non-profit and events that are free to the community. The Spencer Magnet will make every effort to run announcements that meet our guidelines at least once, but will not guarantee publication. Announcements will be published as space is available.

Absentee machine for Wet/Dry vote now open

The special election for the Wet/Dry vote in Spencer County will be held on Tuesday, October 20. Polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Voters who will be out of the county on that day may come into the Spencer County Clerk’s office and vote on the absentee machine. The machine will be open during normal business hours which are Monday and Thursday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. voters who are unable to go to the polls due to age, disability, illness, etc., may contact the clerk’s office for a mail-in absentee ballot. The request for the ballot must be in the clerk’s office by Monday, October 12. For additional information, contact the clerk’s office at 477-3215.

Country Ham Breakfast

Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #210 will be having an all-you-can-eat country ham breakfast from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. Saturday. The breakfast is $6 per person. Carry-out is available. Everyone is welcome.

Chemo Benefit Golf Scramble

There will be a Chemo Benefit Golf Scramble Saturday at Tanglewood Golf Course. Check in will be at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. All proceeds for this event will benefit chemo treatments for a friend with breast cancer.  For additional information or questions, please contact Lennie Zirnheld at 502-738-9643 or Brittany Miracle at 502-468-3469.

Circuit Clerk’s

office closed

The Spencer County Circuit Clerk’s office will be closed Saturday for Octoberfest. Regular hours will resume Monday.

O.R.N.A.I.C. meal and meeting

The Ohio River Native American Intertribal Community (ORNAIC) will have their meeting Sunday at the Spencer County Extension office on Spears Drive. They have a fellowship meal and socializing from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. and start their meeting at 4 p.m.  Everyone is welcome.

SCYBA meeting

The SCYBA (Spencer County Youth Baseball Association) will be having a nomination meeting Sunday for anyone interested in serving on the board for the upcoming 2010 year. Elections will be held November 1. Both meetings will be held at 2 p.m. at Ray Jewell Park.

Chamber meeting 

Spencer County-Taylorsville Chamber of Commerce will meet Thursday, October 8 at noon in the Chamber building.

This month’s topic is “Stress in the Workplace - Managing Stress in Today’s Uncertain Economic Times”.

In Partnership with Norton Healthcare & ValueOptions, the program focuses on the unique stressors occurring in the current U.S. economy and suggests tried and true methods that help individuals deal with stress under any circumstances.

VFW Ladies

Auxiliary auction

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will be holding an auction at 5:30 p.m. on October 10 at the VFW Post. For more information please call Frankie Bramer at 502-477-6441.

Fall Trail Festival

TREK (Trail Riding Equestrians in Kentucky) will be hosting a fundraiser event at Taylorsville Lake State Park October 9-11. They are planning a fundraiser and invite all trail riders, and their friends and family, to come out and support this fun-filled weekend. Call Brenda at 477-5331 for more information.

Warrior Festival/Gathering

The Ohio River Native American Intertribal Community (O.R.N.A.I.C.) will hold their 11th annual Spirit of the Warrior Festival/Gathering October 10 and 11 at Taylorsville Elementary School. Gates will open at 10 a.m. both days. There will be Native American drumming and dancing, singing, flute playing, native American stories, native American inspired crafts, artwork and demonstrations and an honoring of their veterans. The grand entry will be held at 1 p.m. both days. The flag recovery ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday and at 5 p.m. Sunday. This is a family event, so please: no politics, no drugs, no alcoholic beverages, no firearms, and no pets. There will limited bleacher seating so bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Regular admission is $5. Admissions for Active Armed Forces and children

under the age of 12 is free. Admission for senior citizens (age 60 or over) and veterans with proof of service is $2.50. For more information, call 502-354-0123.

Story time at the Library

Story time at the Spencer County Library is held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for toddlers through preschool. Tuesday evenings at 6:30 there will be story time for children preschool through first grade.
