Tuesday thing

Spencer County Middle School Library will be hosting Tuesday Thing Programs. These special programs start at 12 p.m. The library will be open 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.

July 14, Movie Maker Basics: SCHS student, Shane Greenwell, gives the basics of how to get a movie saved and ready to present without a pesky red X where pictures and videos are supposed to appear!

Other events include: July 21, Birds of Prey; July 28, Stamping and Advanced Movie Maker: Aug. 4, Beach Blanket Party.

Road delays

Spencer County motorists are encouraged to use caution on KY 2239 (Overlook Road).  Lane closures and delays possible between KY 55 to the overflow bridge (mile points 0 and 1.7) due to roadway resurfacing.

Chamber of Commerce luncheon

The Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be tomorrow from noon until 1 p.m. The menu will be All American Fried Chicken with “Fourth of July” style fixins from Country Mart.  Cost $7.00

 Wet/dry info meeting

S.A.F.E. (Spencer County Alliance for Family Enrichment) will be holding a community informational meeting the on wet/dry issue at Plum Creek Baptist Church this Sunday evening, beginning at 7 p.m. A petition is currently being circulated that could lead to a wet/dry vote in the near future and the meeting will be to discuss the issues relating to the sales of alcohol in the county.

Lions Club

The Spencer County Lions Club meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month at Elk Creek Restaurant and Grocery beginning at 7 p.m.

VFW meetings

Taylorsville VFW Post #11426 and the Ladies Auxiliary have their monthly meeting the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m.

Pageant info

Little Miss and Mr Spencer County is looking for participants.  You must be a resident of Spencer County as of May 1, 2009.  Contestants must have reached the age of 5 by midnight, June 30 and cannot have reached the age of 8 by midnight, June 30 of the year of the contest.  You must enter as a couple.  Please find the complete details in the Spencer County Fair guide on page 56.  If you do not have a fair guide, stop by a local business or bank and pick one up.  These must be postmarked by July 10 and must be mailed.

Home visits to SCMS students

Spencer County Middle School will be doing a Community outreach during the summer. Each teacher will be visiting their Homeroom students before school starts back on August 11.

Middle school SBDM meeting change

SCMS SBDM will not be meeting on July 8. Instead will be meeting on July 15 at 4:30 p.m. For the remaining 2009-10 school year, the SBDM will meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m.

TES home visits

Taylorville Elementary School’s teachers will be conducting home visits with students over the summer months.  This is a great opportunity to begin developing the positive relationships needed for students to reach their fullest potential.   These visits will be taking place throughout the month of July.  Homeroom teachers will be contacting parents in advance to set up a time that is convenient.

Allen Dennis Memorial Golf Scramble

A golf scramble to benefit the Allen Dennis Scholarship Fund will be held August 8 at Tanglewood Golf Course in Taylorsville. Breakfast and lunch will be served followed b shotgun starts in the morning and afternoon. The fee will be $50 per player or $200 per team. You may sign up by mail by sending a check payable to the allen Dennis Scholarship Fund to John Shouse at 1273 Denney Drive, Lawrenceburg KY 40342. Retired Teachers luncheon

The Spencer County Retired Teachers Association will hold their annual luncheon to honor new retirees on July 9 at 11 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Elk Creek Restaurant. A representative from the Kentucky Retired Teachers System will be the keynote speaker. She will be available to answer questions relating to the retirement system. All retired and active teachers are invited to attend.

Family/Children's portrait fundraiser at Signature HealthCare

Signature HealthCare of Spencer County is having a fundraising event July 9-13. Get a beautiful 8 x 10 family portrait or "Puttin' on the Ritz"  children's double package for only $9.95. The children's double package includes two 8x10s, four 5x7s, and 16 wallet size. All proceeds will benefit senior activities at Signature. American Red Cross classes

The Bullitt/Spencer Counties American Red Cross will hold the following safety classes:

Adult CPR with AED, July 13 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Child/Infant CPR, July 14, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

First Aid, July 16, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

CPR re-certification, July 27 from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The Red Cross will now re-certify a student up to one year past their expiration date.

You must be pre-registered and pre-paid to attend. Call the Bullitt/Spencer Counties American Red Cross at 502-955-6259 to register or if you have any questions.

Youth Service Center sponsors summer day camps

The Spencer County Youth Service Center is sponsoring summer day camps. Spaces are limited. Please contact the YSC to register. There is a $10 registration fee but scholarships are available. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

July 7, starting at noon,  local custom car and motor bike designer, John Triplett, will talk about his business and the opportunities for careers using your hands and creativity. Students–get your picture taken on a cool custom motor bike!

    e--+    Tae Kwon Do – Mrs. Amanda Bruce, first don black belt, WTF. July 27 – 31 from 10 a.m. – noon at SCMS. Open to grades 6 – 12.

Summer food program at TES

Spencer County Public Schools is sponsoring the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The SFSP is a state sponsored program that collaborates with non-profit organizations to provide a FREE nutritionally balanced breakfast and lunch for children less than 19 years of age.

The summer food program is available at Taylorsville Elementary School Cafeteria ONLY this summer from now through July 31. Breakfast will be served from 8 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Parents are asked that a responsible adult accompany younger children.

Fun and food at TES

A schedule of crafts and games is being offered at TES In conjunction with the summer food program.

MPCAA will have crafts and games from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Mondays, now through July 27.

Mrs. Krause will have Cultural Explorations from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. on July 9 and 23 for grades 4 and up. Spencer County C.A.N. will have fun and games from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m.  July 2, 16, and 30.

Kentucky Trails Day

Celebrate Kentucky Trails Day at Taylorsville Lake State Park July 11 from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. sponsored by Trial Riding Equestrians in Kentucky and Kentucky Trail Riders Association. This event is for all hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders. Registration is $15. Contact Brenda Hancock at 477-5331 for information. The event schedule is as follows:

Trail ride,10 a.m.–noon

Vendor booths, 11 a.m.–8 p.m.

Food, noon–6 p.m.

Games, 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

Clinic, 4 p.m.–5 p.m.

Live music, 6 p.m.–8 p.m.

All proceeds to benefit expansion and improvement of Spencer County trails system.

JD Shelburne to perform at Fair

JD Shelburne will be performing at the Spencer County Fair at 8 p.m. July 17. Gate admission is $10 for ages 7 through adult; free for children age 6 and under. There is limited seating. This event is sponsored by the fair board and you may use your "Life Time Membership"card. If you do not have your card please contact a fair board member and one will be provided. You must present your card at the gate. The Spencer County Fair Board would like to invite you to be a "Fair Partner". With any donation to the fair board you will be listed in the Fair Booklet as a sponsor of the JD Shelburne concert. A board will be displayed the night of the concert listing all sponsors as well as an acknowledgment during the concert. CASA Yard Sale

CASA of Shelby and Spencer Co. will be having a yard sale on Saturday July 18, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the front yard lawn of the CASA office, 822 Main St. in Shelbyville. If you have any items that you would like to donate to be sold in the yard sale, then just drop them off at their office. Try to call in advance if you are going to bring things so they know to be at the office when you come. All the proceeds will go directly to CASA of Shelby and Spencer counties. Also, if you would like to help at the yard sale just let them know.

Soccer Association annual meeting

The Spencer County Soccer Association (SCSA) will be holding their annual meeting on July 19 at 4 p.m. at Ray Jewell Park above the concession stand. They will be holding elections at that time.
