Free breakfast

Little Mount Baptist Church Fall Festival committee will be sponsoring a breakfast Saturday, April 25 from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. This event is open to everyone in the community. There will be no charge associated with the breakfast, but donations will be accepted. For more information, contact Shirley Thomas at 477-2335.

SCHS Senior Day Yard Sale

SCHS class of 2009 is having a yard sale on Senior Day, April 25th, to benefit Project Graduation.  We are looking for items to be donated for the sale.  We are also renting booth space for $20.00 per booth, you keep the profits or donate those as well.  We will start collecting items for donations immediately.  Please contact Myra Smith at 724-1437 to make arrangements for pickup or drop off.

Lock-In at the library

The Spencer County Library in cooperation with the Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society will host an after-hours evening of genealogy research on Monday night, April 27th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Whether you are a beginner in accessing family information or a seasoned researcher, take this opportunity to explore the materials available in the library and meet others interested in what has been labeled the fastest growing hobby in America. 

Those attending will be able to become familiar with materials in print and on microfilm offered by the library, hear about workable research techniques and sources from others creating their family histories, and access the public computers for on-line websites.  The library also has wireless capabilities for those with laptops.

Experienced genealogy researchers and library staff will be on hand to provide assistance and try to help with questions. Newly acquired materials will be available and a light snack will be provided.

The program is free, but pre-registration is required since space is limited.  You can register in person or by calling 502-477-8137 during regular business hours.  The library is located at 168 Taylorsville Road. 

3rd annual Apron Contest

In honor of Mothers’ Day, The Red Scooter is sponsoring its third annual Apron Contest. Categories are:

• Anitque: Bring out your own “keepsake” from Mom, Grandma or Aunt Suzie. All antique aprons should have a story card with them. If you have a picture of someone wearing the apron that would be even better.

• Handmade: Make your own apron from scratch. If you are using fabric with special significance, please add a story card with your entry.

• Embellished: Buy a plain apron and embellish it in any way you desire. Attach a card with your apron if you want to tell us something special about your entry.

The entry fee is $1 per apron and you may enter each category only once. All aprons must be entered on or before May 6. Prizes will be compliments of Laurie Woodward of Southern Living at Home.

Gourd bird house contest

May will soon be here and it is time to think about the KY Gourd Art Show. To prepare our minds for this event the KY Gourd Society will host a bird house contest. Here are the rules for the contest.

Gourds can be any size and shape. Any technique may be used. (Wood burned, painted, stained, etc.) Work must be done by the entrant.Gourds may be purchased at the Red Scooter and T & R Antiques and the Sanctuary.True Value Hardware will drill opening FREE.

The finished bird house should be turned in to the Red Scooter by April 28. They will be on display for Viewer’s Choice vote until May 11 at the TEA CUP. Ribbon placement will be awarded on May 11 and hang until May 19. They may be picked up at the Red Scooter after May 22. (The bird houses can be removed on Friday the 15th if showing in the KY Gourd Art Show.)

The divisions are: 6 years and under, 7 years-12 years, 13 years -18 years, 18 years and over.

A call for artists and crafters

On Saturday, May 16, 2009, the City of Taylorsville will host their annual Main Street Arts Fair in Partnership with the Kentucky Gourd Society’s 15th Annual Kentucky Gourd Show.  The Main Street Arts Fair invites artists and crafters to participate in this juried show of Fine Arts and Crafts displayed from 10am to 6pm or later, with $1000.00 in prizes awarded for best in show in two categories, arts and crafts.  The booth fee is $50 for a 12’x12’ space, which entitles the artist or crafter to enter one item in the competition.  Contact Lois Platt for Arts Fair vendor info at (502) 422-1302 or dlaplatt@aol.com.

Living Well


Multi-Purpose Community Action Senior Center will be having a 6 week Living Well Workshop presented by Allison Lewis of the Extension Office. The classes will run through May 2009. The classes will begin at 10:30 a.m. Please call Linda Keeling at 477-8296 for the times of the classes.

Weather siren testing

Spencer County Emergency Management would like to remind residents that the emergency weather sirens will be tested at noon the third Wednesday of each month. If the siren sounds at any other time, it is to provide residents warning of a tornado spotted in the area.

Spencer County Business Assoc. meetings

The Spencer County Business Association (SCBA) meets the first and third Wednesdays of every month at 9 a.m.  The next meeting will be April 15 at On The Way Café. All Spencer County businesses are invited to attend.

Chamber luncheon

The Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting will be held April 16 at the Chamber building.

Meatloaf dinner at All Saints

Knights Kafé is having a meatloaf dinner Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church. Eat-in or carry-out is available. Senior and child plates will be served. All profits go to the charitable works of the Knights of Columbus.

The Spencer County Public Library, located at 168 Taylorsville Road, is having a huge book sale. Paperbacks are $.10, hardback books are $.50, VHS tapes are $1, and books on tape are $1. For more information please call 477-8137

Marriage Tune-up Sessions

Marriage Tune-up Sessions: Would you like your marriage to run a little smoother or get more mileage out of your marriage? Then come to the Free Marriage Tune-up sessions at Risen Lord Church. The Tune-up topics to be covered are: Leadership Parenting on April 19, and Reaffirmation of Wedding Vows on April 26. The free sessions will be held from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays starting March 8 and running through April 26 at Risen Lord Church located at 5138 Taylorsville Rd. Project Graduation Senior day

Project graduation will be having Senior Day on April 25. Plan for a fun-filled day starting at 8 a.m. with a yard sale. If you have items you would like to donate, please contact Robert Brown at the high school. There will also be a Top 25 car show with judging to begin at noon. The Spencer County Clerk’s office will be closed on April 25 due to the Carnival for a Cure to be held in downtown Taylorsville. The Carnival will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The office will resume regular hours April 27.

Carnival for a cure

Spencer County will be hosting it’s first “Carnival for a Cure” downtown Taylorsville April 25. All proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Vendors, parade participants involving any childrens groups, church floats, bands, etc, are needed. Every organization involving children is welcome! This will be a fun day of kids games, food, pony rides, inflatables,  and a petting zoo!

Spencer County

The Spencer County School District is joining with the Spencer County Fire Department in their efforts to raise money for the children of Spencer County through the  WHAS Crusade for Children fundraiser. Please remember that money donated goes back to the county where the contribution was made. The Spencer County Public Schools will be hosting a Crusade Coin Challenge during the month of May (pending Board approval in April.)   WHAS Crusade for Children provides funding for services to our children.  Your support is GREATLY appreciated!

Movie night


There will be a movie night fundraiser for Invisible Children on May 1 at SCHS beginning at 7 p.m. This is a free event but donations will be accepted. Bring you lawn chairs, blankets, etc. Concessions will be available.

Gourd/basket class at the Red Scooter

May is gourd month in Taylorsville, the gourd capital. Why not celebrate by making Gourdie Mae the Garden Angel? This class is being taught at the Red Scooter by Janis Parker. Gourdie Mae’s head is a gourd and her body is formed from basket reed. She is approximately 15 inches tall. The class will be taught on Monday nights, May 4-18 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Cost of the class is $45 which covers all materials. Participants are asked to bring a bucket for water.
