Summer reading program
The Spencer County Library encourages children to read by participating in their Summer Reading Program. Prizes will be awarded to those who sign up to read at least 10 books. Sign-ups begin May 24.
Mud bog, truck and tractor pull Saturday
The Spencer County Fair Board is sponsoring a mud bog/truck and tractor pull this Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Events for children include inflatables. Admission is $8. Kids 10 and under free.This is a family-friendly event. No alcohol will be sold.
Fish fry benefit for Doug and Betty Goodlett
Family and friends of Doug and Betty Goodlett will be holding a fish fry benefit Saturday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church fellowship hall in Mt. Eden.
Doug was involved in a motorcycle accident last month that broke his neck. Proceeds from the benefit will help the Goodletts with expenses as a result of the accident.
The cost will be $7/plate and will include fish, cole slaw, baked beans, a drink and dessert.
Please come out for an evening of good food and live music.
Library summer events
The Spencer County Library will be host to a variety of activities each Tuesday in June at 10:30 a.m. The Rainbow Puppet Show will kick off the month June 1, followed by an educational program by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers June 8. Wonders on Wheels will present a program on amphibians June 15 and Mr. Magic will appear June 22. Library staff will finish off the month with a Summer Reading Celebration June 29. Prizes for those in the reading program will be given on this date or within the following two weeks.
VFW Bunko night
The Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 11426 will be hosting a Bunko Night June 11 beginning at 7 p.m. Seating is limited. To reserve a spot, contact Etta Hahn at 477-2330 or Joyce Waterfill at 477-8103. Entry fee is $10. Cash awards will be given to first, second and third place. A silent auction will also be held.
The Spencer County Extension office will be sponsoring a Family Fitness Fun Day June 5 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Activities for adults, children and seniors will include fitness competitions, a scavenger hunt, health screenings and door prizes. Children could walk away with a bicycle, helmet, a Nintendo Wii or an IPod. Events will be held at Ray Jewell Park, the high school and at the Multi-Purpose Community Action building with a trolley transporting participants to the various locations. In case of rain, the event will be held inside Spencer County High School.
Historical society field trip
The May meeting of the Spencer County Historical and Genealogical Society will be Monday, May 24. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Spencer County Library. Participants will then carpool to Big Springs Cemetery, the historic cemetery on Hwy 55 just across the Nelson Co. line. Those interested in learning more about Spencer County’s history and tracing their family trees are welcome to attend.
The Dancing with the Stars DVD is now available for purchase. Each DVD cost $12 and can be purchased by contacting Belinda Sheeley at 321-9325. Proceeds from sales will be divided among Spencer County High School’s dance team, broadcasting club, FFA and Project Graduation.
