Law enforcement says signs point to domestic dispute

By Mallory Bilger

A domestic dispute appears to have raged out of control Sunday night when a Spencer County woman stabbed her husband in the groin area and then called dispatch to report the crime.
Kentucky State Police arrested Nicole L. Early, 40, of Taylorsville, shortly before 9 p.m. at her Highway to Heaven home for allegedly attacking her husband with a knife. Police found her husband, Robert L. Early, 43, at the scene with critical injuries. He was transported by Air Methods to University of Louisville Hospital. According to a news release, state police dispatch received a call at 8:22 p.m. from Early advising dispatchers she “stabbed her husband in the groin area during a domestic dispute.”
State police said alcohol does appear to be a factor in the case.
Family friend and former neighbor Terri Cooper told The Spencer Magnet Monday morning that Robert Early’s life no longer appeared to be threatened because of the injuries, but he continued to be in critical condition. Cooper said he has had several surgeries since the incident.
Nicole Early is a bus driver for Spencer County Public Schools. Superintendent Chuck Adams confirmed her employment in an email Tuesday morning, but could share little else.
“I can confirm that Ms. Early does indeed drive for us, and also can confirm she will not be working this week.  However, there are many unknown circumstances and complexities to be resolved prior to any official action being taken regarding this situation,” Adams wrote.
Cooper said she has known the Early family for about eight years and that they appeared to be very loving and cohesive. Cooper has been caring for the family’s children since the Sunday incident.
“I have not had any thoughts. I’ve been focused on the kids and that’s it,” Cooper said. “Their kids are like my kids. I’ve focused on what I needed to do for them and that’s it.”
Cooper did say Robert and Nicole Early are loving parents and were known for being kind and generous. She said she never witnessed any violence when around the couple.
“They are a wonderful family. Kind and loving parents, wonderful neighbors, great friends, willing to help anybody,” she said. “Both of them would give you the shirts off their backs.”
Nicole Early faces a first-degree assault domestic violence charge and is lodged at the Shelby County Detention Center.
The Spencer County Sheriff’s Department and Spencer County EMS assisted at the scene.
According to the Spencer County Circuit Clerk’s Office, Early did not have a court date set as of press time. Tuesday afternoon.
