IN THE WORD: The Christian who willfully sins

A preacher and I were talking the other day about how Jesus Christ was coming back to judge his church. A lot of church members think Jesus is coming back to judge the world. The way I read my bible, the church is supposed to set an example to the world. But it seems we have failed in many ways.

Hebrews 10:26-31 – For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

As we look at our nation today, it seems everywhere we look things have gone wrong. Why do you suppose that is? Here is what I believe. The church has failed to get God’s message out. The reason that we have failed is because we don’t want to pay the price. Oh, we will do a little work for Jesus hoping that will be enough to get us to Heaven, but eventually the truth comes out that a lot of us did not really accept Jesus as our personal Saviour on his terms. We accepted him on ours. As a result, we see Christians behaving in the same manner as non-Christians.  How are we going to reach the non-Christians and have a positive impact on their spiritual lives behaving like this?

Take a look at Hebrews 10:26 again, For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no sacrifice for sins. It really makes my skin crawl to hear someone say Oh, I am alright, I have done made it right with God. One question, do you mean when you say this you have done made it right with God to sin?

Just take a look at Hebrews 10:37-39 – For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

As we read Hebrews 10, we have to ask ourselves a question: are we living close enough to God to go through the Judgement Day?
