BACK IN TIME: Celebrating 150 years

These photos are shared from a book of Taylorsville and Spencer County history celebrating the city’s sesquicentennial. The book belonged to T.C. and Louise Bentley and was purchased at auction by David Jewell, who loaned it to the Magnet. Historical information from the book was written and edited by Mary Frances Brown and photos were courtesy of Dr. W. K. Skaggs, Charles Smith, Jan Doyle Brown and Roderic Brown.

National champion dairy judging team tours Europe, participates in the Scottish Highland Contest

The Spencer County FFA Dairy Judging team, Austin Jaggers, Susan Mann, Tevin Shouse, and Joseph Snider, the 2011 National FFA Champions, traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland on June 20, and participated in the 2012 Scottish Highland International contest.

Trailblazers visit Churchill Downs

The Spencer County 4-H Trailblazers Horse Club took a field trip to Churchill Downs on June 4. The group went to the Derby Museum, toured Churchill Downs, and the backside. Shannon Bishop, club leader, organized the field trip. If you are 9-18 and interested in horses, please contact the Extension Office for more details at 477-2217.

Locals compete at Ky. Junior Livestock Expo

Dalton and Dillion Stallings, Spencer County 4-H members, competed earlier this month at Morehead State University in the Kentucky Junior Livestock Expo. Dalton (pictured) won Reserve Grand Champion market hog, and Grand Champion Kentucky Proud market hog. Dillion placed second in both of his classes with his two market hogs, and received first place Kentucky Proud with both of those pigs as well. Also pictured is Emily Hume, mentor.

Local horse owners encouraged to complete survey if received

Beginning this week, horse owners across Kentucky could be some of 15,000 “horse-holds” selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Ag Statistics Service to contribute critically important information about Kentucky’s horse industry. Organizers urge those receiving a survey in the mail to promptly complete and return the information.
