The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health.

Fall is the time to think about all those flowers we associate with spring: daffodils, crocus, and other easy-to-grow flowering bulbs. If you aren’t growing any spring-flowering bulbs in your landscape, you are missing out on some easy-to-grow plants that provide early color to your garden.

Trick-or-treaters won’t be the only ones in disguises this Halloween.  Potential hazards to children also might appear in disguises, or not be apparent.

Spencer County’s 4-H Shooting Sports Club was right on target at this year’s 4-H State Shooting Sports Competition winning several awards. This two-day competition was at the Bluegrass Sportsman’s Club in Wilmore on Saturday, Sept. 15, and at the Kentucky Wildlife Management Center in Berea on Sunday, Sept. 16.  Spencer County 4-H had 17 members to compete in state this year.
