A local FFA member, already immersed in a hands-on experience aimed to jumpstart careers in agriculture, can add one more impressive achievement: national finalist. Kristina E. Glasscock of the Spencer County FFA was one of four national finalists for the Agricultural Sales — Placement proficiency award at the 85th National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis.
The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health.
The Spencer County 4-H Livestock Club sent three members, Danielle Montgomery, Ashley Montgomery and Brayden Morrow, to Manhattan, Kan., to compete in the American Royal on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest at Kansas State University.
Fall is the time to think about all those flowers we associate with spring: daffodils, crocus, and other easy-to-grow flowering bulbs. If you aren’t growing any spring-flowering bulbs in your landscape, you are missing out on some easy-to-grow plants that provide early color to your garden.
Trick-or-treaters won’t be the only ones in disguises this Halloween. Potential hazards to children also might appear in disguises, or not be apparent.
District Court Judges Linda Armstrong and Donna Dutton, who serve Spencer County, participated in the 2012 Kentucky District Judges College that took place Sept. 16-19 at Lake Barkley State Park in Cadiz. The Administrative Office of the Courts provided the judicial education program for the state’s District Court judges. The program included 19 hours of continuing education credit for the judges.
Spencer County’s 4-H Shooting Sports Club was right on target at this year’s 4-H State Shooting Sports Competition winning several awards. This two-day competition was at the Bluegrass Sportsman’s Club in Wilmore on Saturday, Sept. 15, and at the Kentucky Wildlife Management Center in Berea on Sunday, Sept. 16. Spencer County 4-H had 17 members to compete in state this year.
The arrival of fall is an important time for livestock producers to assess their winter hay supplies. Kentucky forage and livestock producers made a lot of hay this September, and for much of the state, hay supplies should be adequate for winter feeding. However, in areas of Western Kentucky that experienced a longer, more extensive drought, some producers may have supply issues.
